Frozen yogurt is trending in Cape Town

There seems to be a lot of little frozen yogurt shops popping up in town. I guess it’s part of the Capetonian drive to healthier living or something…

I have always been a fan of Marcel’s – whenever I’m at the V&A I will get a small tub of their chocolate frozen yogurt topped with mini Smarties (yeah yeah, I realise that’s not exactly a healthy alternative.  But boy does it taste goooooood. :) )

But I recently visited two new spots which really impressed me.  The first is Myög at 103 Kloof St.  They are housed in a beautiful old Victorian style building and there are cute little seats outside so you can get some fresh air while enjoying your frozen yogurt fix.  Inside you’ll find faux grass carpeting and bright colours which give it a very fun feel.

But remember folks, this is town and if you decide to sit outside, you will get harassed by the "cash strapped locals" passing by...

They keep things simple by only offering 2 flavours:  vanilla & chocolate.  Then they have 3 size options served in cups (no sugar cones here folks – that’s just a waste of kilojoules in any case).  A small will set you back R19.95, medium R25.95 and large R29.95.

But then you can add some individualised flair with the toppings you choose.  For 1 topping, add another R6, 2 toppings R11 and 3 toppings R15. They have a good selection of fruits, sweet treats and sauces to choose from:

I went for a small cup, chocolate frozen yogurt with a Oreo biscuit topping:

Yes, I did contemplate the fruit options... but in the end, the chocolate temptation was just too much for me.

The yogurt was very creamy and certainly stiff competition to my usual Marcel’s treat.  Yum!  My friend Leigh has become totally obsessed with this place now.  I’m wondering whether the 2 cute French boys who own & run the shop has anything to do with it?  Hmmmm. ;)   And I’m guessing she has also fallen for the following sales pitch:

Hey, that sounds way more fun than that old apple a day saying.

Myög is open Mon to Sat 10am to 10pm and from midday to 10pm on Sundays.

The second spot is in the new extension of the Cape Quarter, it’s downstairs by the Spar and is somehow linked to the Italian Restaurant, Andiamo.  I present to you Yogiberri:

Here they have 3 flavour options:  plain, pomegranate or swirl (which is a mix of the plain & pomegranate).  They also have 3 size options, again served in cups:  small R10, medium R20 and large R25.   If you add toppings, you pay an extra R7.50.  But you can add up to 4 toppings on a medium sized serving for example.  So you can totally maximise on that extra spend.

The BF and I both went for the swirl.  I had a small one with kiwi & raspberries.  Bjorn went for the medium with mango, kiwi & pomegranate:

** Apologies – we had already started digging in when I took these shots.  It was just too damn tempting **

I must admit, flavour & texture wise – I did prefer the Yogiberri frozen yogurt over what I had at Myög.  Toppings aside – just talking about the yogurt itself.  Loved the fresh pomegranate taste and it seemed to be slightly creamier.  But that’s not to say I won’t be going back to Myög, they have a seriously cute spot over there and it’s close to home.  I’m guessing I will be frequenting both on a regular basis from now on, depending on where I’m at.

Now I have always wondered whether frozen yogurt really is better for you than ice cream.  I mean, it tastes similar and certainly feels like you’re having an evil treat, so what’s the deal exactly?  But the people at Yogiberri put my mind to rest with this very informative sign explaining everything:

Right, so a second (and maybe third) serving anyone?

Yogiberri is open Mon to Sat from 7am to 9pm and then from 8am to 9pm on Sundays.

So, go check out these two spots for yourselves and tell me which one is your favourite.  Also if you know of any other cute yogurt spots that’s a must-see, give me a shout and share the love.
