Mediterranean flavours at Saboroso

A little while ago I met a few friends at relatively new Mediterranean spot, Saboroso @ 38 Victoria Rd, Bakoven.  This location actually used to be the home of Greek restaurant, Marika’s, which has now moved to Upper Buitenkant St in Gardens.

Saboroso is an intimate dining spot with a simple menu and “no-frills-no-fuss with a touch of quirky” decor.  Just the way I like it. ;)

There’s a good selection of tasty tapas and dips.  For mains you can enjoy a pizza or choose between some lamb, poultry or seafood dishes.  And then my eyes immediately zoned in on the Lindt chocolate balls dessert.  It sounded decadently evil… I just knew I had to try it…

I was in a bit of a snacky mood.  So I opted for 3 tapas intead of a main:

From left to right above you have the:

  • Meatballs with chorizo (R44) – Beef mince mixed with chorizo, cayenne pepper, onion, garlic, parsley and sherry
  • Prawn rissoles (R33) – Pastry pockets crumbed and fried filled with prawns in a creamy chilli sauce
  • Beef espetada (R55) – 150gr Cubed rump grilled on a skewer rubbed with salt & garlic

I enjoyed all 3.  But if I had to rank them, I’d probably say my favourite was the prawn rissoles, followed by the meatballs and then the espetada.

A few other people at the table opted for the fish of the day (R110) – Grilled and served with lemon butter, mussels and a basil parmesan mash:

This dish seemed to go down as a real treat as there were squeaky-clean plates all round.  I liked the touch of flair with the mussels & the fancy parmesan mash.  It gave the dish a nice twist.

But now let us get down to the true star of the show for me, that Lindt ball dessert (R33).  Basically they deep fry white chocolate Lindt balls and then serve it with creamy vanilla ice cream and a caramel type sauce.

BOOM!

That baby knocked my socks off.  But beware, it is super sweet, so it’s not for the faint-hearted. :)

I think overall my Miss K Kiss-o-Meter rating for Saboroso would be:

To me it’s a good solid choice for a tasty, easy meal at average Cape Town prices.  The atmosphere is pretty relaxed which makes it perfect for a good laugh with a group of mates and the service was really friendly.

It looks like it will be a nice cosy spot for the cold winter months ahead and I would definitely go back again.
