If you’re thinking “Who the hell is Engelbert Humperdinck!?!” That’s exactly what I thought when I got an email from Real Concerts announcing his show at the Grand West Arena on 20 June…
The email started off by saying that because I had attended a previous Real Concerts event, I was included in this email distribution. That got me thinking… what shows have I watched recently and how the hell did that make them think I might be interested in this one?
I quizzed my friend Darryn – cause he’s my concert insider guy – and he could recall Jimmy Carr, Russell Peters and Faithless being amongst the Real Concerts events we’ve attended within the past year or so. I was like… seriously… two comedians with a pretty dark sense of humour and then Faithless!!! These people think the girl who watched this:
And totally lost her brain to legendary songs like “Insomnia” and “God is a DJ” might be intrigued by this old dude who I’m sorry to say looks pretty damn creepy in his promo pic? Let’s keep it REAL here Real Concerts. I see this as a serious communications FAIL.
I would suggest they look into improving their mailing system. Maybe best to make a note of people’s preferences and keep track of their show choices, then send out info accordingly. I certainly don’t think they were hitting their target market with this one. Hehe.

PS. In case this looks like it could be your kind of thing… the email went on so say that he has sold over 150 million records during his career, including 63 gold and 24 platinum discs. And people like Jimi Hendrix and The Carpenters, started out as opening acts for him in the late’60′s, 70’s and ’80′s. ALSO at one stage he took a # 1 spot away from the Beatles nogal. Wow, maybe I should go…… nah.

Genuinely I like the comedians you saw and Faithless. That said I am a HUGE FAN of Engelbert as grew up with a mom that loved him and played his music and I will be at his show tonight. So maybe Real Concerts is onto something with their mass marketing, I agree not always a good thing but sometimes there is a 28 year old like me with varied taste
All I was trying to say was that Big Concerts should check what your preferences are. For me – I wouldn’t have selected this genre of music. But like you’ve pointed out, you would have. That’s all cool, people have different tastes, I get it. But they need to find out what those preferences are. I think their hit rate will be much better that way. So did you enjoy the show?
I did! Given there were only a handful of youngsters, I still enjoyed partying with my mama and aunts and all. His a timer with moves, even got a lady up on stage and was grinding her
Haha, the guy sounds like he still has some “spunk” then.
Are there still tickets available nd how much is it going for
I think your best bet is to check on Computicket hey…
He’s a 75 yr old music legend who’s representing Britain at the Eurovision song contest this year. I wouldn’t go to a concert either but I do have one word for this guy; respect. Ps: you’re funny:) xxx
Yeah, fair enough. I youtube’d him an all that… Have forwarded the mail to my mom.
