Exactly one year ago I arrived back from an almost 4 week solo journey through Italy and decided to start My Love Affair With Cape Town.
Why? Well you see while I was travelling through the insanely beautiful country that is Italia I was keeping a mini travel blog called My Love Affair with Italy (which you can check out here if you’re interested in going there sometime yourself: http://myloveaffairwithitaly.wordpress.com).
The name kinda came about because that Eat.Pray.Love movie had just been all the rage and my friends decided to brand my holiday as “Eat.Shop.Shag” – cause my friends are like super mature & sweet like that.
So then I decided to to do a play on the “Love” part from the actual movie title and it became “My love affair with…”. Quite simple really.
The idea behind the Italy blog was just to share my experience with my friends and family. I knew that there’d be so much to tell once I got back home and I’d likely have to retell the same stories over and over again, so I figured by keeping a bit of an online visual diary as I progressed, I would save myself a bit of that schlep and I would also not forget any cool details.
By the end of my trip there were lots of people I didn’t know from a bar of soap who were following my blog. I never for a moment thought I’d get more than like 10 hits a day, so it was really awesome to see the readership grow and grow. Somewhere between Venice & Positano the blogging bug hit me hard. I really enjoyed having a creative outlet of sorts and I started thinking about how I could keep it going once I got back home.
With a bit of motivation from some friends & family, I decided that I would write about my ongoing love affair with the city that is and will always be my first love, Cape Town.
As much as I enjoy travelling as frequently as I can, I’m always very happy to come home. This city constantly surprises me and never fails to make me smile. I count myself truly lucky to be living in such a vibrant, exciting & beautiful place.
365 days of eating, drinking, partying, exploring and causing trouble later and I’ve still got so much to blog about! Sjoe. So like that 1970s film title says: ”Let the good times roll”.
