If you haven’t yet heard of the V&A Waterfront’s Master of the Trade Routes competition, I’ll give you a bit of background info.
Basically there are 27 restaurants participating in this challenge to bring Capetonians dishes which showcase the unique flavours of the Cape. You as a diner then gets to vote for your favourite and the top 8 restaurants will then compete in a gala event final to become the Ultimate Master.
By simply voting for your favourite dish, you stand a chance of winning double tickets to the gala event as well as 27 dining experiences at the participating restaurants. That just sounds soooooo amazing.
One of the participating restaurants is my favourite Cape Town sushi spot, Willoughby & Co. Last week on Twitter I kept seeing people post pictures of their Master of the Trade Route dishes and my mouth was watering. So yesterday I decided there was just no way I could get through the day without popping in for a visit…
They have 2 dishes which form part of their entry into the competition:
Starter
Willoughby Threesome – R79
Salmon, Tuna & Local Fish prepared in 3 different ways:
- Salmon in a Citrus Yuzu & Soya Dressing
- Tuna in a spicy Garlic & Peanut Dressing
- Local Fish-Ceviche-Coriander,Lime & Fresh Chilli
Main Course – Signature Dish
The Bomb – R129
Tempura Prawn Roll with a spicy seared Tuna and Avocado wrapping. Served with a secret dressing and combination of Asian Spices.
Unfortunately they were out of line fish, so we couldn’t try the starter. But I was really there for The Bomb in any case, so I wasn’t fussed. This is what it The Bomb looks like:

10 pieces of sushi heaven. The flavours on this baby are absolutely insane. I wanted to lick the plate because that secret sauce is good enough to bathe in. ![]()
I completed my entry form which our lovely waitress provided, giving them top scores of course, and now I’m also in the running for that amazing prize. Woohoo!
Now here’s the most important bit: They are only serving The Bomb until this Wed, 22 Aug. So get your butts over there ASAP. I mean it. If you’re a sushi lover, you’re not gonna want to miss out on this one. I actually wrote in my comments that I’m really hoping they add it as a regular menu item. I would certainly be back there on a weekly basis to indulge.
Good luck to the guys & girls at Willoughby’s! Based on this dish, I think they’ll be coming out tops.

I missed it! They are my favorite place for sushi in town. I’ve never been disappointed in the quality.
