Tons of farm kitchen charm at Tamboers Winkel

On Sat I tried out the relatively new Tamboers Winkel in De Lorentz St, Tamboerskloof for a spot of breakfast.

It’s around the corner from Melissa’s and very close to Cafe Paradiso.  If you’re heading up Kloof St, you’ll turn right into De Lorentz and it’s right there on your left.

They opened on the 2nd of June and owner Theo van Niekerk has been quoted in several features I could find online saying that he was trying to re-create the kitchen of his grandparents’ farm in Ficksburg – a place where he spent lots of time as a kid.

I think his vision was executed with perfection as that’s exactly the feel I got when I walked in.  It’s a cosy, inviting & a truly beautiful space.  Certainly somewhere you’d want to linger for as long as you can…

It’s small inside with limited seating, but I think that just adds to the charm really.  There’s a big 10 seater wooden table in the middle of the room which encourages folks to come together and then there are some seats at the window and another small table to the side for those who prefer a bit more privacy.

They serve breakfast from 9am onwards which can be paired with a beautiful cup of Deluxe coffee.  The breakfast menu which is written up on a blackboard and as I understand changes regularly based on what fresh ingredients they have on hand, had a little something for everybody.  A fresh fruit breakfast option for those watching their winter “muffin tops” and totally indulgent filled croissants (think pear preserve & brie or berry compot & cream) for those who have decided to throw caution to the wind.

Both Bjorn and I opted for the Tamboers breakfast (R40) which consisted of a sweetcorn frittata served with grilled cherry tomatoes, bacon and herbs & drizzled with a balsamic reduction:

Looks like a piece of art, doesn’t it?

Then we also got a side order of freshly baked rye (R10) served with some of that yummy sounding pear preserve:

Nothing beats fresh, soft, yummy bread…

The food was amazing.  That paired with the friendly service and beautiful decor had me totally hooked.  I’m dying to go back and try their lunch which is served from 12pm.  The lunch menu also changes regularly and I hear they make the most amazing free-range roast chicken pie as well as some kick ass salads, sandwiches & soups.  But ja, homemade chicken pie… mmmmm… they’ve totally got me on that one.  I’ve also read amazing things about their charcuterie and cheese boards which are served until 8pm.

Important to note is that they also serve as a deli.  You can buy a rotisserie free range chicken for only R60 (available between 12 and 5pm), free range eggs at R13, a selection of freshly baked breads, berry & vanilla ice tea, charcuterie from 12 Pigs and cheese from Get Stuffed.  They pride themselves in supporting fresh & local and they get major extra points in my book for doing so. :)

I would give Tamboers Winkel an all round  on the Miss K Kiss-o-Meter scale.  They’ve definitely got a new “groupie” over here.

Opening times:   Mon to Fri 8am-6pm, Sat and Sun 9am-4pm
Call them on:  021 424 0521

And of course, what’s a good chill spot without free wi-fi…  they got you covered, so you can sit back & relax.

Cassis expands

Just a quick one to tell you that my favourite French Patisserie & Boulangerie (and makers of the best macarons in Cape Town), Cassis, has expanded their offering in the Gardens Shopping Centre.

They now also have a cafe upstairs where you can enjoy a warm cuppa, some brekkie or a light lunch:

I stopped by the other day and enjoyed this awesome breakfast pot (I think it was around R50):

Oh yeah, all the good things in one pot. What could be better than that…

But of course, DO NOT leave there without some macarons for the road…  Well I say “road”, but we all know they probably won’t even make it to the parking garage. :)

Checkin’ out Superette in Woodstock

** Please note: Superette has moved to The Woodstock Exchange at 66 Albert Rd **

According to Wikipedia, a Superette, is a compact food market “convenience store” or “mini-mart”.

Our very own Woodstock area, which has become quite the trendy spot to be for interesting little cafes, shops and all things creative, got it’s own version of a Superette a while back and I’ve been dying to check it out.  Brought to you by the creators of the very successful Neighbourgoods Market, I just knew it had to be a goodie.

Superette is a dining spot which prides itself on being a “farm-to-table” setup.  They work with local food & design guys and girls to bring you some yummy treats which you can purchase as well as things like gorgeous handmade tableware.

As I knew we were heading into a heavy “hipster” area, I wanted to make sure I would blend in.  So I decided my hipster reindeer jersey which I purchased from my favourite online store, Forever21, would be perfect:

It’s hipster cause it’s totally nerdy and a bit “ironic” – I mean it’s like a xmas themed jersey, but you’re not wearing it at xmas. You see?

Paired with some red skinny jeans, I was like one of the gang…  Don’t know what a hipster is?  Have a look at this Youtube clip I posted back in Aug last year: Poking fun at “hipsters” – it should clarify things.  And don’t get me wrong, I love hipsters.  Without them, Cape Town just wouldn’t be the same.  But I have to admit, they are quite an “intriguing breed”. :)

Now back to Superette.  The interior has a bit of a retro feel, using a grey & white setting with little pops of colour, like vibrant yellow, orange & pink.  It’s funky and fresh and I asolutely loved it.

Food wise the menu covers a good variety of tasty breakfast options, designer sandwiches and some lunch things like bangers & mash, the Superette burger and a salad plate.  Then I hear they also do a supper club, usually twice a month, but you have to keep an eye out on their website for details.

We were there for brekkie, so we went for the “All day breakfast sandwich” (R55) with scrambled eggs on sourdough rye with roasted baby tomatoes and crispy bacon:

Boom! Now that is what I call a sandwich.  It was DE-LIC-IOUS.

I think I would give Superette a well-rounded on the Miss K Kiss-o-Meter scale.  The service was friendly & fast.  The place is beautiful.  And the food is good.  Also important to note is that they have free Wifi.  Everybody loves free Wifi.  And it’s great for hipster spotting of course – a favourite Cape Town pastime. ;)

So do pop on over to 218 Albert Road to check it out for yourself.  I’m sure you’re going to love it just as much as I did.

Birds Boutique is just plain lovely

The other day I had a great lunch session with my gorgeous friend, Lucy.  The goal was to catch up and take a bit of a breather from her hectic final bit of organising for her upcoming wedding.

As I know that weddings can be crazy stressful, I chose Birds Boutique Cafe in Bree St for the occasion as it just always looked so serene from the outside…  (and OK I was totally suckered by the hearts on the outer wall & the thought of cute birdies everywhere) ;)

You’ll find Birds Boutique right next to Clarke’s and across the road from &Union.  It is a seriously pretty spot with lots of natural food furnishings and clever recycled decor elements:

My absolute favourite detail was the soft pink swan salt & pepper set which was just too cute for words:

It’s actually from the Milnerton market – something which I’ve always turned my nose up to.  But now I might just go check it out…

To drink I opted for some freshly squeezed pineapple juice (R18), served with love.  Aaaaaah.

And to eat, Lucy had a grilled chicken sandwich with nice chunky chips (R45):

And I had the quiche of the day with a fresh side salad (also R45):

Deceptively simple meals, but packed with flavour.  My quiche was truly one of the best I’ve had in a very long time and Lucy was very happy with her tasty sandwich as well.   Price wise I would say it’s pretty good for inner city cafe dining and the service was also friendly & easy.

My Miss K Kiss-o-Meter rating for Birds Boutique would be:

They are open Mon to Fri from 7am to 6pm and Sat from 8am to 2pm serving hearty breakfasts and lunches.  I’m planning on going back to try their chocolate & cherry scones which someone only told me about afterwards.  Apparently they are insane, so can’t miss out on that one.

Mad about Manna!

If you haven’t yet been to Manna Epicure (151 Kloof St), then you’re totally missing out.  That place is absolutely gorgeous! Oh and the food is pretty yummy too… ;)

There’s a really cute outside deck area where you can enjoy the sunshine on a warm day:

Pretty from the outside…

But the most stunning part is the interior – crisp white-on-white design that just blows you away:

But even prettier inside!!!

There’s some seriously fun elements too, like this in-your-face wooden chandellier type light:

It’s totally overwhelming, slightly strange… yet so incredibly awesome…

To kick off my Manna experience, I opted for a Chai Latte.  I am totally Chai Latte obsessed at the moment, just can’t get enough of the stuff!   You could hook me up to a Chai Latte drip and I would be in heaven…

Come to mama!

Then I just couldn’t resist indulging in the french toast croissant with bacon, brie cheese, rocket and honey.  Doesn’t that just sound soooooo good!?

Oh yeah baby… you turn me on…

Lastly my friend Nix and I decided to share a piece of the red velvet cake that we had beein eyeing out since sitting down at our table.  I had never had red velvet cake before, so I was very excited…

Seriously, how beautiful is this cake?  It’s almost too pretty to  eat…

I think in my mind, because of the bright red colour – I was expecting something totally different.  Like some kind of crazy berry flavour that packed a lot of punch.  But in reality it just kinda tasted like a mildly flavoured chocolate cake…  hmmmm… disappointment…  It was slightly dry as well, but I think that was because we had the last piece that was left on the display.  Never a good option.   Nix claims that she can make a much better red velvet cake and that I will totally fall in love with it.  She’s just gonna have to prove herself on that one, but I will be all to happy to be part of the tasting panel. haha.

I decided not to let the cake mishap affect my feelings about Manna in general, so my Miss K Kiss-o-Meter ratings would be as follows:

  • Vibe:
  • Price:
  • Food:
  • Service:

After all those kilojoule heavy treats I had to starve myself the rest of the day (I’m sadly not even joking) – but it was 100% worth it.

Breakfast bliss at Raw cafe

Raw Cafe on the corner of Derry & Exner streets in Vredehoek is a firm favourite of mine for breakfast/brunch.

The menu is unpretencious with lots of great wholesome options.  The decor is simple & fresh.  The service is always friendly.  And the owners, the oh so lovely Tyrone & Victoria, are always so warm & welcoming. On a sunny day, it’s the perfect spot to soak up some sun while enjoying a great cuppa…

On my latest visit I tried the breakfast wrap (R36) for the first time and was blown away.  It was reeeeeaaaally good.  I went for the added bacon option, cause no breakfast meal is complete without bacon! haha.  And it also had a bit of a sweet chilli bite to it, which was really awesome, because I love all things hot & spicy… :)

Yum!!!

It also didn’t leave you feeling icky like a standard breakfast fry up normally does.  It was filling, yet light and jam-packed with flavour.

My Miss K Kiss-o-Meter ratings for Raw cafe would be as follows:

  • Vibe:
  • Price:
  • Food:
  • Service:

Solid scores for a solid spot.  So, I’ll see you guys there?
