The Dog’s Bollocks

I’m kinda in two minds about telling you guys about this spot… you see, it’s one of those little gems which you actually just want to keep as a secret so it doesn’t get too crowded.  But then again, it’s so damn awesome, it would be soooo wrong of me not to share the love. :)

The Dog’s Bollocks is a no-frills-no-fuss burger joint in Roodehek St – nr 6, Gardens.  If you’re going “Huh, where the hell is that?”  It’s a few streets up from Roeland St, between Buitenkant & Hope St.   So an easy 2min walk from mine. Sweet.

Here owner, Nigel, serves up some of the meatiest, tastiest, juiciest burgers in town (and apparently some nachos as well – but the burgers are where it’s at).  He operates from what looks like a little garage and is only open Mon – Sat from 5pm to 10pm, or until he runs out of stock really.  So get there early folks!  For example we got there just after 7:30pm on a Wed eve and we luckily got the last 2 burgers.

The burger options start from a plain one for R40, to a basic cheese and then jumps into some more interesting waters with things like:  Pepperberry blue, Chilli Chocolate Molé, Old School Mega Slider, Prego Burger and Jalepéno Cheese (all at R55).

The kitchen is small, but well equipped.  And I loved the open plan vibe so you can watch Nigel do his thing from your little lawn furniture chair, as you drool with anticipation.

Drinks wise, you have one option and one option only:  The U-TUBE.  What is that exactly?  Well ladies & gents, wine snobs look away now, but it is in fact dooswyn:

Ta da!

For R50 you get your own 1.5 liter tube.  Your options are:  Dry red, a lighter dry red and a dry white.  There you go.  It’s as simple as that.  I’m happy to say that I tried the dry white and it was quite pleasant.  To me it just added to the cool, unpretentious feel of the place.

Seeing as this is a one man show, the food does take a bit of time.  But trust me, it’s well worth the wait and you’re gonna want to linger around there as long as you can in any case.  The place really sucks you in.   After much excitement, our burgers were finally ready.  Check it out:

BOOM! Seriously, that burger was the size of my face. hehe. I went for the Pepperberry Blue burger.

As you’ll see, here you don’t get cutlery or plates.  Your burger is wrapped in some paper and the rest is totally up to you.

It’s quite a messy challenge, but so incredibly delicious you don’t even care about the sauce all over your face and running down your arms.  My top tips however (mostly for the girls out there cause I know you manne can handle anything):

  • If you have long hair – bring a hairband and tie it up.  Trust me on this one.
  • Come hungry… like “I could eat a cow” hungry.
  • Take enough serviettes – they will be your best friend.
  • Do some jaw loosening exercises from about 1 week prior. ;)

For it’s total uniqueness, fun & relaxed feel and tasty fair, my Miss K Kiss-o-Meter rating for the Dog’s Bollocks would be a top score of:

So go do some exploring in the little side streets of Gardens and check it out for yourselves.  I’m sure you’ll fall in love just like I did.

Room service…

One of the awesome things about my apartment building is that there is a little coffee shop on the ground level of the building called Mugged.

Their menu has a Lebanese flavour, serving hearty breakfasts, salads, snacky stuff like chilli poppers (a favourite of mine), pastas, pizzas, gourmet sandwiches, wraps & burgers.  I must also add that they have the best chips in town – like those thin chips at McDonalds, but a thousand times tastier. :)

Of course as a coffee shop, they also have you covered on all your caffiene cravings.  And they do these seriously yummy mini chocolate cupcakes and great muffins, scones & croissants.

The food is really well priced, with nothing on the menu more than R70. And a coffee will only cost you R15.

The place is always buzzing with locals amd they have free WiFi and a big screen TV to catch up on those sporting events and such…

BUT – you guys know what the best part is?  They do FREE delivery up to my apartment!!!  I use them like my very own room service.  It’s freakin’ awesome…  the perfect thing for those lazy days where you couldn’t be fussed to head out to get food and you don’t feel like paying those crazy delivery costs at Mr Delivery.

Convenience doesn’t get better than this. ;)

Friday night madness in the Mother City

So, what do you need for a successful evening in the mother city?  It’s pretty simple:

  1. A bunch of crazy friends
  2. Something to line the stomach
  3. A sense of adventure

To kick off the evening, I met up with friends at Royale Eatery (273 Long St).  Now there are quite a few great burger joints in Cape Town, but Royale has always been my personal favourite.

Loooove the quirky interior

This place has such a cool energy and it’s always packed.  Then they also have some seriously interesting burger options on the menu:

Hmmm... where should I start?

There are also other food options, but the burgers are where it’s at bitches. :)   I usually go for the “Big bird”  – ostrich patty with home-made beetroot relish. Yum!  But apparently there’s an ostrich shortage due to some ostrich flu drama I was totally unaware of.  So I had to settle for something else… sob…  I figured I’d go for a classic then, a cheddar burger with sweet potato fries. (you can choose from normal fries, wedges or the sweet potato fries – or even a mix! Very cool.)

Oh yeah baby... now that's what I'm talkin about...

Here’s my friend Mike’s choice – the “Fat bastard” with normal fries:

I'm not fat, I'm just big boned!

Both Mike and I agreed that we were expecting the Fat Bastard to be bigger.  I mean come one people, it’s called the FAT BASTARD!  That kinda sets a mental expectation there.  Other than that little glitch though (excuse the pun), the food was amazing like always.  I mean it takes a hell of a lot to shut our loud & rude group up, but you could hear crickets as we ate our burgers.

My official Miss K Kiss-o-Meter rating:

  • Vibe:
  • Price:
  • Service:
  • Food:

Yup, that’s a solid 4 kissess all round!  There’s a definate loooooong term relationships on the cards here…

Our next stop was Tjing Tjing bar (165 Longmarket St).  Tjing Tjing is situated on the 3rd level of a beautifully restored 181 year old home and has an open air deck area as well (which I’m sure is going to be very popular in summer).  On the ground level you have “Dear Me” brasserie, a spot I’m actually very keen to check out sometime – I hear the menu changes daily.  Nice… and then on the 2nd level there is a private function room.  But back to that roof top bar…  the one thing that seriously irked us was that we had to stand in a queue outside (who still does that btw!?!) and the door man seemed to have a serious issue with counting.  Six people would leave and then he’d only let 2 people in.  We were like “wtf dude!?! It’s freakin’ freezing out here!”  We got inside in drips and drabs.  Very annoying.

Worth standing out in the cold for? Not really convinced...

Once inside, the place didn’t exactly blow me away.  Don’t get me wrong, it’s a pretty nice bar.  But there was certainly nothing extra special about it – there was a bar though, and I guess that’s all we really needed.  That and my “specials”…

My hot sexy bitches!

We hung out there for a while.  But got a bit bored in the end.  So we were on the move again. We ended up at the Fez (11 Mechau St).  I actually really don’t like the Fez, it’s an awesome venue, but its pricey to get in and it seems to attract quite  a weird crowd most of the time.  But somehow, after way too many drinks, I’m always easily convinced by others that this will be our most rocking option for a spot of dancin’.  I think we got there after midnight… I say “think” because firstly I don’t remember how we got there.  And secondly, Fez is pretty much a big black hole in my memory.  I did however find this (and several other pictures) on my camera yesterday:

Um... ja... don't really know how to explain this one...

So looks like I had a great time! haha. If I look at my BBM history, I think I got home at about 3:30am.  Pretty good for an old lady hey!  But that brings me to another point – your Blackberry should have an automatic off switch when it senses too much alcohol in your system.  Like it should detect it from the sweat glands on your palm or something and then just switch off.  I get waaaaaay to chatty in the early hours of the morning. :)

Needless to say… I felt like total poo yesterday!!!  I only surfaced at like 1:30pm – and it took quite a lot of concealer to get me looking half decent again.  But sometimes a mad night leads to some casualties… haha.  It’s just part of the game…

OK, chat soon my lovelies
