Traffic Live Winter fashion show @ Shimmy Beach Club (with video)

DSC07144Last Monday eve I got to attend Cape Town based label, Traffic Live‘s Winter Fashion Show which was held at Shimmy Beach Club
in the Waterfront in association with BlackBerry.

Traffic Live has been around since 2004 and specialises in edgy Cape Town street fashion for both men & women.  With this show, Traffic Live also launched a new logo and rebranding plan which will be rolled out across all Traffic Live stores this year.  They also announced a new branch which will be opening at the V&A Waterfront as well as a Traffic Live e-commerce store which should be launching in September.

Before the show kicked off, we got to take in the beautiful view, have a look at the Traffic Live pop-up store, mingle & enjoy some bubbly and snacks.  No complaints here. :)

Now I’m not just going to do the standard thing and show you some pics from the show, I thought it would be more fun to see the clothing in action.  So I decided to do a little video instead, compressing all the fashion awesomeness down to just under 2min of highlights.  But before we have a look at that – here’s some extra info on the show:

Now here goes:

The key looks you would’ve spotted there were: Utility, berrylicious, new nudes, sport luxe, embellished and black & gold.  There were quite a few things I loved, but my ultimate favourites was that first look with the studded blouse and light denims, then that hot leather jacket & long floral dress combo and I really must have the denim jacket with the spikes…

Saw anything you liked?  Then pay them a visit at either their flagship store at 197 Long Street or their other stores in Canal Walk and Cavendish.  For any enquiries you can also contact them on 021 424 2250 or info@trafficshop.co.za.

Here’s to winter and the fun fashion it brings…

Lovely Indian flavours at Masala Dosa

DSC03250I looooves me some tasty Indian food. :)

And when I normally think of Indian food in Cape Town, places like Bukhara, Eastern Food Bazaar, Vintage India & Jewel of India come to mind.  Personally I think Bukhara is overpriced, but the other three I quite enjoy from time to time.  One place however that’s always eluded me for some reason is Masala Dosa in Long St…

The boyfriend then happened to have a meal there the other day with some friends and he was so impressed, he dragged me over there just 2 days later.

From a decor perspective, it was definitely my kinda place.  Casual, cosy, fun & quirky and far from your traditional Indian spot.  I especially loved the two massive puppets guarding the front door (others might find it creepy – but I didn’t), all the bright colours and the mock Bollywood movie posters showcasing items from the menu.

masaladosa

Oh and look, bottom left – it’s Richard Parker!!! (if you’ve seen Life of Pi, you’ll get that one. If you haven’t yet, what the hell are you waiting for?)

The menu has lots of tempting things to satisfy your Indian cravings (with a focus on south Indian cuisine), but Bjorn took charge of the ordering cause he wanted me to try the things he loved from his previous visit.

So we went for the sev puri (from the starters options) which is 4 portions of layered of Indian bread, curry filling, raita, coriander, salsa and crackles (an crispy Indian snack) -   we got one chicken (R40) and one lamb (R42):

DSC03245

Mmmm, looks good huh?

And then we shared the oriental salad which is mixed cabbage and carrots on a bed of salad greens in a sweet cashew, ginger & soy dressing, sprinkled with roasted sesame seeds, peanuts and crispy noodles (R52 – or you can also add chicken which will then make it R65):

DSC03247

So fresh…

I will admit, when he first ordered I was like, that’s not going to be enough food.  I mean, I was bloody starving!  And I don’t normally eat salad out of my own free will (I’m a meat girl).  But he reassured me it was quite a lot, quite filling and that the salad would rock my world.  So I went with it…  And boy I’m glad I did.  That salad did in fact rock my world and the sev puri was super tasty.  I had a very happy food boep after this meal which is always a good sign in my book.

For it’s friendly service, fun atmosphere, well priced menu & really yummy food, I’m going to give Masala Dosa an overall Miss K Kiss-o-Meter rating of:

kiss4

And a big high five to owner Amit Raz (who’s actually Israeli born btw, but honed his Indian skills by enrolling in a cooking school over in India) cause this has now become my new favourite Indian spot in town.

Important info:

  • Address: 167 Long St
  • Tel: 021 424 6772
  • Opening Hours:  Mon – Sat 12:00 to 22:30

Then also check out their website for all the details, but I see they do cooking classes on Saturdays from 9:00 to 12:00 at R380 pp (min 8 ppl – max 16 ppl).

PS.  For those wondering what Masala Dosa actually means…   it’s a popular south Indian breakfast dish consisting of crispy rice & a lentil pancake served with potato curry, coconut sauce & a spicy vegetable and lentil broth.

Check out Galbi for Korean BBQ awesomeness

I actually can’t believe that this place has been around for well over a year and last week was the first time I’d even heard about it…  I have to assume it’s because it is just so great that people don’t want to tell too many others about it for fear of it becoming too commercialised or so popular, you’ll never ever get a table ever again.  But you guys know me, I can’t keep something this awesome to myself.  I have an undying need to share! :)

So Galbi is the only Korean BBQ in town.  “Galbi” is a Korean word meaning “rib” and it generally refers to a variety of grilled dishes in Korean cuisine that is made with soy sauce marinated beef or pork short ribs.  Galbi houses are very very popular over in Korea, something which co-owner, Coenraad Groenewald, picked up when he spent some time over there teaching English.  Upon return to SA he decided to introduce Capetonians to the Galbi concept, but with adding a bit of a South African twist to it (I mean we already love to braai – add some “speaking foreign” to it and we are totally sold!).

Galbi’s official address is 210 Long St, but the entrance is actually around the corner in Bloem St.  You’ll enter a very cute, fairy light lit passage way, then turn left to get to the front door.  At that point you might think to yourself “Hmmm, not so sure about this place”, cause it doesn’t look like too much from the outside.  But you know that old “don’t judge a book by it’s cover” story?  Yeah, this very much applies here.

Once inside you’re welcomed by beautiful Asian paper lanterns hanging from the ceiling, with an incredible brass “chimney system” peeking out in between:

But why the intricate smoke outlet system?  Well because each table it fitted with one of these babies:

Right in the middle of your table so everyone can huddle around it nicely.

To drink, we kicked off with our complimentary glasses of wine.  Hot tip:  If you go on a Wed eve and you order something for over R50 pp, you get a free glass of house white or red.  We went for the red and not sure what is was (should’ve asked), but it was actually quite nice.  After that we got a bit more adventurous and figured when in a Galbi house, one surely goes for a Korean wine taster (R40):

From left to right: Makgeoli, Soju, Baeck Se Ju, Korean Sake

The Makgeoli was my favourite, but it seemed more like a dessert wine.  Makes sense then that they have an ice cream on their dessert menu which is infused with it.  I didn’t like the Soju – it had a strong tequila vibe to it and I’m not a fan of tequila.  The Baeck Se Ju & Korean Sake were both really tasty, I could easily do a big glass of either.  Good to know for next time. ;)

Now get this.  If you need a waiter, you just press the little bell on your table:

How awesome is that? No awkward waiting around. No dealing with a waiter who’s constantly hovering over your table. You’re in total control. Perfection.

The bell gives off a soft ding-dong, nothing too hectic, so don’t worry.  It’s not going to be totally embarrassing like those 80s doorbells which played songs like Old MacDonald and such.  But it will leave that “You can ring my be-e-e-ll, ring my bell” song stuck in your head.  Shit sorry, I probably just planted it, didn’t I? Hehe.

Right with decor, wine & service out of the way (If you’re keeping track, and you should be: I think they’re all awesome), let’s talk food.

The menu has a solid list of appetisers to kick off with.  We opted for the following two just to ease ourselves into the grilling vibe:

  • Mushroom Shots: R21
White button mushrooms stuffed with lemon pepper and freshly grated Parmesan. Place it face up on the fire until a juicy center emerges. Shoot away!
  • Pro Pear: R45
A ready-to-eat array of crisp pear wedges wrapped in prosciutto ham and finished with finely chopped mint. No grilling required!

Both = awesome.  I also spotted jalapeno poppers (R34) which I want to try next time.

Then for mains you have two options:

  1. Either just select a whole bunch of things to braai along with some side dishes of your choice.
  2. Or if it’s all a bit overwhelming, they have what they call “Galbi Sets” where they’ve kinda done the thinking for you.

If you go for option 1 – you can select pretty much any type of meat or even chicken or fish to braai.  Prices range from R24 – R69 per portion and you’ve got beef, lamb, Korean sausage, pork belly, chicken satay, ostrich, springbok, kudu, zebra, trout and even some veggie things for those who don’t do meat.  Me being an Afrikaanse meisie – I only do meat.  Actually someone told me a joke the other day which pretty much sums up Afrikaans folk and their obsession with meat & braaing, here goes:

Son goes to his dad and says: “Dad, I have to tell you something… I’m gay”
Dad goes: “Flippen hell, ek’t amper gedog jy gaan se jy’s damn Vegetarian”  :)

Right, then for sides they’ve got wedges, sweet potatoe fries, mash potatoes (garlic or wasabi infured… mmmmm), tempura veggies, grilled zucchini, baked butternut, corn on the cob, spinach and a few salad options.  Prices range from R18 to R36 for a side.

We opted for one of the Galbi sets – and with our SA roots speaking to us, we opted for two Safari Sets (each cost R250 & serves 2 ppl).  This is what you get in a set:

  • Mouthwatering ostrich fan fillet, 100g kudu, 100g warthog and 100g zebra sirloin (in a variety of our house marinades). Served with our famous rustic garlic mash, baked butternut (drizzled with maple syrup and cinnamon), fresh corn on the cob and our crisp house mixed salad (baie lekker!).

We just added some extra sweet potatoe fries… Check out our spread:

I’m salivating just looking at this again…  the 3 little pots in the middle there are a spicy chilli mix, sesame oil & black pepper (just btw).  All the meat was top class, but my personal favourite was the kudu.

They also have a signature Korean Galbi set (R230 for 2 ppl) with stuff like beef, pork,  marinated tofu & Korean sides.  Or a fusion set (R250 for 2ppl) with some fillet, Xinjiang Lamb, rump & a springbok sosatie.  And last, but not least, a totally vegetarian friendly set (R230 for 2 ppl).  Nervous about your braai skills?  No stress.  There are also some soup, noodle & rice meal options (R42 – R49) to try.

Now what better way to finish up a mean ass Korean BBQ than with S’mores (R14 each):

Yum!

Another desset which looked soooo good was their Chocolate Fondue for R55 (enough for 2 ppl) – seasonal fruit with three chocolate sauces: mint, chilli & espresso.

For an all round excellent experience, I’m going to give Galbi a top Miss K Kiss-o-Meter rating of:   Yes, I realise that is pretty high for a spot that’s not exactly fine dining and doesn’t have some fancy pants, award winning chef.  But this was the most fun I’ve had at a restaurant in a very long time.  And for that I have to give them lots and lots of cred.  Plus if you stuff up your meat, it’s kinda your own fault.  I was clever enough to ensure I went with people who damn sure know their way around a braai. ;)

As the Galbi guys say: “Braai with caution… Eat with abandon!”  (sooo love that)

Galbi is open for dinner: 6:00pm – 10:30pm, Tuesday – Sunday
And you can contact them on: 021 424 3030

Intrigued by this Long St find

I was walking in Long street the other day, just running some errands and stuff.  I had to pop into Eagle Lighting to get a light fitting for my lounge… ja ja very boring… en route from my parking spot I happened to look up, very lucky because normally when I’m in a hurry I do that eyes traight forward power walk thing.  What I saw though totally stopped me in my tracks.  I just couldn’t believe that I hadn’t noticed this beautiful buidling before:

Address: 76 Long St.  Right by the Pan African Market.

I immediately felt like I had been transported to a totally different place.  Somewhere far away and exotic…

Now right there on the middle floor there’s a little cafe called Timbuktu – let me zoom in a little so you can see it better:

Doesn’t that look like such an awesome spot?  I did a bit of Google research.  They don’t seem to have a website, but what I did find was that they serve authentic Ethiopian cuisine.  Timbuktu is actually a town in Mali which is in West Africa and totally on the opposite side to Ethiopia.  So I’m not really making a connection here, but maybe I’m just missing something…

The folks at Cape Town Live seem to think it’s a pretty cool spot to try.  Check out their review here.  I’m totally keen to check it out for myself, but I’m also quite nervous.  You see, I’ve done some travelling in Africa for work and I’ve had some seriously scary food experiences…  even saw rat on a stick in Malawi!  I kid you not.

I’ve decided to approach with caution.  Get some more info first.  Find out what the word on the street is.  So if anybody out there has actually tried out Timbuktu, please leave a comment below and let me know what you thought.

If not, who’s brave enough to come with me? :)

Introducing the South China Dim Sum Bar

I’m really loving the movement towards fuss free, chilled out dining here in Cape Town.  Don’t get me wrong, I do love a good fine dining experience every now and then.  But most of the time I just want a hearty meal at a great price in a relaxed setting…

The new South China Dim Sum Bar in Long St totally fits that bill:

The menu is simple.  There’s a BYOB (that’s “Bring Your Own Booze”) policy – which is actually quite cool cause you get to drink what you want and you don’t need to worry about corkage.  You place your order at the kitchen counter, select your condiments & dipping sauces and then your food is served on eco friendly paper plates.  Easy peasy. :)

While sipping on my homemade lemon ice tea (R15) – which was very refreshing btw:

I really enjoyed looking at the fun movie posters on the wall:

A very cool touch guys

But soon we got stuck into that menu.  First up we tried the beef potstickers (R28 for 3) and the bbq chicken char-sinbao (R12 each):

Potstickers on the right & bbq chicken steamed bun on the left

We wanted a few more of those bbq chicken buns – but sadly they were sold out, we snapped up the very last one.  Lucky us, cause that baby rocked.

Next up we had the steamed pork wontons (R28 for 3):

Then the Vietnamese summer roll (R30) which is like a veggie wrap served with a spicy peanut sauce:

Loooooved that peanut sauce

Joe also forced me to try the steamed turnip cake (R28 for 2 portions) – even though in my head I was going “hell no”. ;)

Not gonna lie, the soft spongy texture still put me off (it’s just a personal thing), but it was way nicer than I had pictured in my head. hehe

And then Joe still had space for the Wonton noodle soup (R45):

Everything we had was very light, fresh & tasty.  You could tell the two boys who run this shop have a real passion for serving up good food.   The standouts for me though were the beef potstickers & bbq chicken char-sinbao.  Mmmmmmm.

My Miss K Kiss-o-Meter rating for the for this seriously cute dim sum bar would be:

Give them a call on 078 846 3656 to make a booking (it gets quite busy – so better safe than sorry).  They are at nr 289 Long St, which is right at the top just past Royale Eatery.  And they are open from Wed – Fri for lunch (12:30 – 3pm) and Tue – Sun for dinner (6pm till late).  Oh and just FYI – they also have a stand at the Hope St Market on Saturdays.

Update:  They now have a card machine and they serve wine, Chinese beer & saki.

Hitting Long Street

It’s been a looooong time since I’ve checked out some of the night spots in Long Street.  But on Sat eve I had a good reason to show face in this famous street… My friend Stan was having a farewell thing at a spot called Fat Back Soul (289 Long St).

From the outside it is quite unassuming – you might even totally miss it while driving past:

Come on in guys & gals...

But the interior sure as hell packs a punch!

Ta da!!!

I loved every single detail… from the multi colour leather couches, to the funky cube details on the walls & ceiling…

Oooh and the bamboo bar stools & the mirrored walls!

The ladies bathroom also kicked ass.  A place that does a lot of effort on that scores serious bonus points in my book.

Music wise, expect to hear some funky old school r&b / hip hop tunes.  Easy listening, but with a lot of soul.  I really liked the vibe.

Stan wanted to say goodbye in style – so he had a bottle of Patrón XO Café on ice for us and every new guest had to share in a round of shots:

Dangerous stuff...

I HATE tequila.  But this stuff’s awesome… You can’t taste the tequila at all.  It just tastes like a yummy coffee liqueur. :)   Just don’t underestimate it – it is still quite lethal.  I did however pace myself… still feeling a bit rough from the night before…  was just a nice chilled evening with friends.

On the way out I was taken back by all the bright lights of Long St and all the people wandering around.  I thought to myself: “Exactly why haven’t I partied here in such a long time?”  Then my heel (of my new shoes!) got stuck in a hole on the wonky, badly kept sidewalk and as I was trying to get it out this drunk guy (or he could have been a car guard. haha) said “Hey baby… you look so nice… how about a kiss…”  And I was like “Ah yes… there it is…”  ;)

But seriously, Fat Back Soul is a really awesome spot and I’m glad I got to check it out.  I need to make a plan to also check out some of the other new spots in this area.  I’m sure there’s a couple more gems waiting to be explored…

I finally get my A-List fix

So I’ve already told you guys about my shameless A-List addiction here.  Well last week I got another one of those tempting little SMSs:

“A-LIST launches a HOT new collection today! AMAZING pieces for AMAZING people! Get the best of next seasons key international looks only at A-LIST. Hurry!!!”

I was panic-stricken… you see A-List is in Long St in town and I work all the way out in the dullsville northern suburbs!  Aaarggh…  I was gonna have to wait for the weekend, but by then lots of beautiful goodies would have been snatched up by fashion addicts like myself, but who are lucky enough to work in the city bowl.  Bitches… :)

I finally managed to make it over there on Saturday and I was glad to see that there were still lots of awesome stuff for me to work my way through!  My new golden rule when it comes to shopping is: “If you’re not sure about something, try it on!!!  You might just love it…”  So usually, thanks to that rule, I snatch up a whole bunch of items to try on.

A-List has got you covered on pretty much all the key spring/summer trends:

Lots of brights...

Brights and colour-blocking are going to be huge – most of the stuff I bought in Italy are super bright.  Then they also have lots of options for the monochromatic trend:

Who doesn't look good in these shades? I will ALWAYS love black...

Romantic freaks and girly girls are totally in luck! Pretty is in, and in a BIG way.  Soft fabrics, feminine styling, floral prints, frilly and lacy bits here and there…

Pretty in pink!

I also found quite a few items that work for the “70s inspired” look that is also pinned to be massively popular.  See the lovely “ink” colours below and flowy blouses, that’s very on trend.

Luckily most of these trends are also super comfy & very flattering...

Then A-List also stocks fabulous accessories – think belts, scarves, head gear and more:

I need all of it... seriously! ;)

And some one-of-a-kind jewellery pieces:

I looooove shiny things!

I also couldn’t resist taking a snap of the mannequin – her name is Anna.  They dress her up in different outfits every day… lucky girl!

Looking faaaabulous dahling!

I tried on a bunch of really cool things, but finally settled on two dresses at only R495 each.  The first has a seriously fun print and is short and flowy with pockets! I love pockets…

I added the belt. But it's also a previous A-List purchase.

Here’s a close-up of the print:

Baby elephants! How freakin' cute is that?!

The second is a sexy little black & white number:

This print also has some seriously cool detail... think trees, birds, temples and more!

But the real deal-clincher was the awesome heart cut-out on the back:

Ta da!!! :) Not the best shot - I had to do it myself, but you get the idea...

OK, so by now my male readers are probably passed out or ready to puke at all the girliness on this blog post.  Sorry guys!  I’ll look out for something dirrrrty to write about soon… I promise.  But for girls, this is pretty much like porn. So let us have our moments every now and again. haha.

Right, gotta run. Chat soon. xxx

PS:  Boys, remember there is a mens collection at their 2nd store at 221 Long Street.  Go check it out!

Friday night madness in the Mother City

So, what do you need for a successful evening in the mother city?  It’s pretty simple:

  1. A bunch of crazy friends
  2. Something to line the stomach
  3. A sense of adventure

To kick off the evening, I met up with friends at Royale Eatery (273 Long St).  Now there are quite a few great burger joints in Cape Town, but Royale has always been my personal favourite.

Loooove the quirky interior

This place has such a cool energy and it’s always packed.  Then they also have some seriously interesting burger options on the menu:

Hmmm... where should I start?

There are also other food options, but the burgers are where it’s at bitches. :)   I usually go for the “Big bird”  – ostrich patty with home-made beetroot relish. Yum!  But apparently there’s an ostrich shortage due to some ostrich flu drama I was totally unaware of.  So I had to settle for something else… sob…  I figured I’d go for a classic then, a cheddar burger with sweet potato fries. (you can choose from normal fries, wedges or the sweet potato fries – or even a mix! Very cool.)

Oh yeah baby... now that's what I'm talkin about...

Here’s my friend Mike’s choice – the “Fat bastard” with normal fries:

I'm not fat, I'm just big boned!

Both Mike and I agreed that we were expecting the Fat Bastard to be bigger.  I mean come one people, it’s called the FAT BASTARD!  That kinda sets a mental expectation there.  Other than that little glitch though (excuse the pun), the food was amazing like always.  I mean it takes a hell of a lot to shut our loud & rude group up, but you could hear crickets as we ate our burgers.

My official Miss K Kiss-o-Meter rating:

  • Vibe:
  • Price:
  • Service:
  • Food:

Yup, that’s a solid 4 kissess all round!  There’s a definate loooooong term relationships on the cards here…

Our next stop was Tjing Tjing bar (165 Longmarket St).  Tjing Tjing is situated on the 3rd level of a beautifully restored 181 year old home and has an open air deck area as well (which I’m sure is going to be very popular in summer).  On the ground level you have “Dear Me” brasserie, a spot I’m actually very keen to check out sometime – I hear the menu changes daily.  Nice… and then on the 2nd level there is a private function room.  But back to that roof top bar…  the one thing that seriously irked us was that we had to stand in a queue outside (who still does that btw!?!) and the door man seemed to have a serious issue with counting.  Six people would leave and then he’d only let 2 people in.  We were like “wtf dude!?! It’s freakin’ freezing out here!”  We got inside in drips and drabs.  Very annoying.

Worth standing out in the cold for? Not really convinced...

Once inside, the place didn’t exactly blow me away.  Don’t get me wrong, it’s a pretty nice bar.  But there was certainly nothing extra special about it – there was a bar though, and I guess that’s all we really needed.  That and my “specials”…

My hot sexy bitches!

We hung out there for a while.  But got a bit bored in the end.  So we were on the move again. We ended up at the Fez (11 Mechau St).  I actually really don’t like the Fez, it’s an awesome venue, but its pricey to get in and it seems to attract quite  a weird crowd most of the time.  But somehow, after way too many drinks, I’m always easily convinced by others that this will be our most rocking option for a spot of dancin’.  I think we got there after midnight… I say “think” because firstly I don’t remember how we got there.  And secondly, Fez is pretty much a big black hole in my memory.  I did however find this (and several other pictures) on my camera yesterday:

Um... ja... don't really know how to explain this one...

So looks like I had a great time! haha. If I look at my BBM history, I think I got home at about 3:30am.  Pretty good for an old lady hey!  But that brings me to another point – your Blackberry should have an automatic off switch when it senses too much alcohol in your system.  Like it should detect it from the sweat glands on your palm or something and then just switch off.  I get waaaaaay to chatty in the early hours of the morning. :)

Needless to say… I felt like total poo yesterday!!!  I only surfaced at like 1:30pm – and it took quite a lot of concealer to get me looking half decent again.  But sometimes a mad night leads to some casualties… haha.  It’s just part of the game…

OK, chat soon my lovelies

xxx

Uh oh!!!

OK, so this afternoon I got an SMS from my absolute FAVOURITE Cape Town boutique – A-LIST.

The message reads:

“A-LIST just launched their summer preview range. Loads of bold colour, tribal prints + cocktail dresses.”

My first reaction to this was “Noooooooo… must resist the urge to shop!!!”  Especially after all the money I just spent in Italy.  But you see, I have a serious problem when it comes to this store… I don’t think I’ve ever left that that place without buying something.  About 80% of the dresses in my wardrobe are all from A-LIST.   It’s my no fail go to place – it’s never let me down. :)

And yes, I do realise that we’re in the middle of winter, so buying from their summer range would seem a bit strange right now.  But you have to be prepared people!  You can’t just change over into a new season without proper planning. haha.

A-LIST actually has two stores:

  • The first (and original) is at 110 Long Street, just below Whale Street,  and stocks only ladies stuff  – clothes & accessories.
  • The second is higher up in Long Street at nr 221 and also stocks a small mens collection.

Go check it out.  And please buy everything – that way there’s less temptation for me!

I might see you there… (if my self control fails me… which is highly likely)
