“Meh”zepoli…

Last week I joined some fabulous folks for a birthday dinner at Greek spot, Mezepoli, in Camps Bay.  It’s a beautiful restaurant with a crisp white & blue palette which makes you feel like you’ve been transported to a sunny Greek island.  Loved it.

If appearance was anything to go by (I thought), this should be quite a cool dining experience…

To kick off we got some tzatziki, hummus & pita breads to snack on.  Then we followed that up with a good selection of mezes and light meals:

From top left, clockwise: falafel (R34), haloumi (R55), Sheftalia – Cypriot mince meat balls (R39), chicken Souvlaki in pita (R45), calamari (R39), spanakopita (R39)

To be very honest, I was seriously disappointed by the food.  You know when someone doesn’t really like something, but they’re trying to be polite, so when you ask them they say: “Ja… it was… it was nice…”  It’s kinda on par with a woman saying that she’s “fine”. ;)   Well that’s exactly how I felt about it.  To me, Mezepoli was more like “just another pretty face”… great location, lovely decor, but no oomph were it really matters.  The service btw wasn’t great either…

I decided to give them one last chance by ordering some baklava (R39) for dessert:Again, it looks pretty good.  They certainly have the presentation part down.  But it was dry and tasteless, kinda like it had been standing around for about a week before being served.  A not-so-great end to a not-so-great experience overall.  Best way to summarise it?  3 words: Wah-wah-wah (yeah, I know – that doesn’t really count as a word – but it works for me OK :) )

As much as it breaks my heart… because I had such high hopes for this place, I can only give Mezepoli a Miss K Kiss-o-Meter rating of:

Maybe we were just there on a bad night.  For the record, it was a Monday eve and we were the only table there…  whatever the reason, I won’t be going back.  Life’s too short for bad food I say!

Dunkley square adventures

Last Friday eve I headed over to good old Dunkley Square, between Barnet & Wandel St in Gardens, for a surprise birthday party for an old friend (and nooooooo, that’s not a dig at his age… although it would’ve been a good one ;) ).

The first stop for the evening was lovely Greek eatery, Maria’s.  Now Maria’s has actually been around for yonks, in fact I vaguely remember going there for dinner once during my early Cape Town years.  I recall it being not much to look at, but the food was well priced & tasty.  I now hear that it was closed for about a two year period and then re-opened with a new, fresh look towards the beginning of 2011.

I must say, I absolutely love the new look.  Beautiful fairy lights in the trees outside.  Very cosy inside.  An easy, welcoming space with large windows and neutral, yet warm colours.  It kinda felt like we had stepped out of Cape Town and into a little European street cafe.

I loved the fact that they serve your wine in pretty glass tumblers – apparently that’s just the way they would do it over in Greece.  And then these LED candles had me totally fascinated:

So kitch it's cool or a major decor no-no? Not really sure to be honest... but I kinda liked them, just a little.

Now the birthday boy is one of those people who already has everything.  So buying for him is a tough job.  Thank goodness for Big Blue – your one-stop shop for anything cool, weird & fun.  Part of his gift was this “Maybe you touched your genitals” hand sanitiser which had everyone practically in tears:

Well... maybe you did? :)

Could you imagine whipping that out at the office with a straight face and asking your colleagues whether they maybe wanted to clean their hands?  Awkward…

After the big S-U-R-P-R-I-S-E!!!, which was a very successful one btw thanks to his girlfriend’s amazing planning skills, we got stuck into some mezes.  Items like fried halloumi, tiropitakia, spanakopita, keftethes served with tzatziki and more:

All so incredibly yum! I was really blown away by these mezes. Especially that fried halloumi. Mmmmmm.

For mains we got to choose from a selection of seafood & lamb dishes.  I went for the patagonian calamari, while the folks around me went for the beer battered hake & slow roasted Karoo lamb:

Apologies, I didn't really take note of prices as we had all paid a set price per person which covered you for food & drinks.

I’m not gonna lie, after those amazing mezes I was a bit underwhelmed by the mains.  It wasn’t bad by any means, I just expected the flavours to pop more.  It might have been partly due to us being such a big group – we filled the entire place, so trying to get that much food out at the same time can be quite challenging.

But you know, there’s really a lot to be said for a place that manages to create such a warm, welcoming atmosphere ensuring that everyone’s having an absolute blast.  The food to me was a bit of a sideline cause I was having such a great time…

How do you like my new super cheese collage feature huh? Impressed much? ;)

Theeeeen, the grand finale…dessert time!  And what does every birthday boy want?  A car cake of course!

Ta da bitches...

Gillian, our party planner, told me that dealing with Maria’s to put this party together was a really pleasant experience.  She says the owners were lovely and very accommodating and I can personally vouch for their friendly service.  So if you are looking for a venue for a party or private function, give them a call on 021 461 3333.

When Maria’s started closing up, we walked a solid 10 meters to Roxy’s Cafe, which is situated on the same side as Maria’s, but on the other end of the square.  It’s quite an interesting little spot with comic books all over the walls, an toy boxes (of all things) on the ceiling…

Hmmmm.... OK OK, it's weird.... but I think I like it...

I liked the chilled vibe at Roxy’s.  It’s a cool spot to have a few drinks and a laugh without having to deal with long queues to get in, scary bouncers and being squeezed in like sardines.  That definitely gets bonus points in my book.

They also have this cute old typewriter on display, which actually still works.  We decided to do a “This is Karisa on tik” photo…

OK I'll admit... it was way funnier at the time... you have to get the Afrikaans connection and all... but hey, everyone knows wine fuelled ideas always sound way more brilliant in the moment. haha.

Best thing of all, Dunkey Square is almost right on my doorstep.  So when I ran out of steam (yes, that sometimes happens, just sometimes) my tipsy butt was only like 5min away from my comfy bed.  Fantastic!

All ‘n all it was a very successful night out & about with some great friends.  And that’s exactly what Friday nights should be all about. :)

Take me to the Greek!

On Sunday I headed out to Hout Bay for a late lunch at Greek restaurant, Spiro’s (30 Main Rd) with a group of my crazy (yet still surprisingly sophisticated. lol) friends.  Now I have to say, I very rarely head out to Hout Bay cause in my head it just seems sooooooo far away…  but in reality, it’s like only a 25min drive from mine, so I’ve actually just been a plain lazy ass. :)

Stepping into Spiro’s made me feel like I was entering the set of Mamma Mia! (the 2008 movie version – yes, I actually watched it.  Judge away.).  Lots and lots of blue & white:

A gorgeous outside area out back:

And a rockin’ little island style bar:

Now I’m one of those people who like to study the menu online before going to a restaurant.  As the boyfriend would say “If there’s no PDF, she’s pretty pissed”. haha.  So I already knew what I would be having for mains.  For two days I had the following in my head (to the tune of that little song they always play at baseball games): “ribs ribs ribs ribs, ribs ribs ribs ribs, dun-te-de-dun-te-dun, charge!”  Yes folks – I would be digging into the 400g Pork ribs.  Oh yeah…

But of course we couldn’t just jump straight into mains - mezes are something one should NEVER miss out on.  So Leigh and decided to share a Dipathon (R75) which is basically a selection of any 3 dips served with pita bread.  We opted for the following:

  • Hummus (a classic)
  • Tyrokafteri (creamy feta & chilli)
  • Melitzanosalata (grilled aubergine mashed with garlic, spring onion, lemon & e.v.o)

That hummus was without a doubt the best I’ve ever tasted.  Loved the other two as well, but the hummus I wanted to bloody marry.  I will never again be able to enjoy those ones you buy at the grocery stores… I’ve been spoilt for life. ;)

After a bit of a break and some stretching, I was ready for those ribs.  Check ‘em out:

Boom!

It was A-MA-ZING.  The meat was super soft and that basting was so deliciously sticky.  I couldn’t finish it all  (shouldn’t have had that exta piece of damn pita bread), but I was still glad I was wearing a loose dress to hide my new rib boep.  Not sexy.

Our 2pm lunch reservation turned into a long, lazy afternoon of chatting, eating, laughing, drinking and then this little cup of liquid dynamite:

We finally decided to head home at about 6:30pm.  By which point that Greek cuppa had worked its way through my system and my brain felt like it was on supersonic speed (I don’t normally drink coffee – my friends & family have disallowed it, my system just doesn’t deal with it too well).  The BF unfortunately got the brunt of it. Hehe.  I even punched him a few times. But hey, he got to enjoy my rib doggy bag, so that kinda made up for the abuse he had to endure.  Luckily as fast as it hits my system, I also crash & burn and I was fast asleep nice & early that evening.  Like a little evil, caffeine pumped up angel… :)

So, my Miss K Kiss-o-Meter rating for Spiro’s would be an all round:

The atmosphere, food & service was all all fantastic and we seriously had the sweetest waitor in the world as well.  I will definitely be going back again, hopefully with another big group of mates in tow.

Enjoying a Turkish feast

On Wed eve I had dinner at Anatoli in Napier St, Green Point.   It is a Turkish restaurant that’s been around for about 26 years and is housed in a beautiful Victorian warehouse dating back to 1904.

Now those people who followed my travel blog would know that I got to spend a day in Istanbul on my way back to SA, and I didn’t have the best experience.  As a woman traveling alone, I wasn’t made to feel very welcome and I had to resort to eating some Turkish delights on a lonely park bench for lunch.  Not so cool.   So the thought of finally getting to experience a proper Turkish feast was just way too exciting for words.

The decor I thought was amazing.  It makes you feel like you’ve truly just stepped into a local spot in Turkey:

We were quite big group – so I had organised with the restaurant before hand that we would be going for one of their set menu options:

TopkapiR195.00 p.p
Selection of 10 mezes, small garlic bread, lamb chicken and vegeterian cooked dishes served with rice, baklava, stuffed apricot and date lozenges as dessert.

This worked out really well because we didn’t have to wait long for our food and everyone’s food came out together.  This is not something that’s usually achievable with a big table.  So it was great.

Our starters consisted off a spread including the following mezze’s (plus bread):  Humus, spicy lamb meat balls, chicken & walnut puree, finely chopped tomato, cucumber, chillies & olive oil, broad bean puree, green beans cooked in olive oil with tomatoes, garlic & black pepper corns, grilled peppers, dolmasi (wine leaves stuffed with rice, pine nuts, black currants and spices) & a tzatziki type item:

That bread rocked my world! I'm still lusting after it... Then I enjoyed most of the other things except the dolmasi (it's just not for me). What's really nice is that this option gives you a chance to try things you wouldn't normally have ordered. Thus opening your mind to new tastes. Love it.

I was sticking to white wine for the evening – I seem to be slightly paranoid about red wine now after splashing out on a Brite Smile treatment, hehe (I’ll get over it soon I’m sure) – but I did have a small taste of this Jason’s Hill Merlot which everyone at the table was raving about:

I had never heard of this winery before. But that Merlot was beautiful. Very smooth & easy drinking.

For mains they brought out big platters of rice, a lamb dish, a chicken dish & a vegetarian dish:

I enjoyed everything – it was a good, hearty meal that reminded me of a great Sunday lunch buffet.  Was very filling though, we ended up with quite a few doggy bags.

Then for dessert we had a small piece of Baklava, a stuffed apricot & a small taste of some sweet orange item:

For those hardcore dessert lovers out there – you might be thinking that this sweet spread looks a bit tiny.  But trust me – it packs quite a punch!  It’s way too sweet to have any more than this serving.   I enjoyed the baklava – but the other two items weren’t really my thing.   I’ve mentioned before that I’m not a fan of fruit as a dessert – fruit is for breakfast, end of story. ;)

Now this might seem strange, but I have to show you some pics of the toilets! haha.  It was just sooooo pretty.   Look at these awesome Turkish lanterns they have in there:

I really wanted to buy some of these while in Istanbul at the Grand Bazaar, but I didn't have any space left... bummer.

And then look at the beautiful tiles:

Could have had my meal in here! hehe

My dad always reckons you need to check out a restaurant’s toilet to get an idea of how clean their kitchen is.  Based on what I saw there – I felt pretty reassured that the kitchen was in top notch.

OK – back to the dinner table.  So how do you end off a Turkish meal?  With a punch-in-the-face Turkish coffee of course!  I went for the medium sweet option.  After those super sweet desserts, I figured the very sweet option would literally cause my brain to go explode. :)

Trust me - you need the water. This little baby kept me awake until about 3am, but it was really tasty. Just a tip: Don't sip all the way to the bottom of the cup. Try one and you'll see what I mean.

The general consensus from the table was that this spot was a winner. It was really fun to try something totally different for a change and now I know exactly which Turkish dishes to opt for next time.

My Miss K Kiss-o-Meter ratings for Anatoli would be:

    • Vibe:
    • Price:
    • Food:
    • Service:
