Online shopping with Rubybox

DSC03805

You should already know about Rubybox - the guys who sends you a monthly box of beauty goodies to play with for only R119 per month (or less if you sign up for a 3/6/12 month subscription).

If this is the first time you’re hearing about them, do hop on over to their website and check it out. If you’re a girl who’s really into skin care & cosmetics, chances are you’re going to love the concept.  If you’re a guy – listen up cause this makes for a pretty awesome gift for that special lady in your life.  ** big brownie points tip there boys **  I’m proud to say that they’re a Cape Town based company, but they ship nationwide of course.

Something new I’ve recently spotted though is that they now also have an online store (and we all know how much I love online shopping).  Everything from makeup, skin care, fragrances, body goodies and hair stuffs, all under one convenient virtual roof so to speak.

Screen Shot 2013-02-02 at 9.12.34 AM.png

They also have some kick ass sales where you can secure some nice deals.  Come now, every girl loves a good deal.  So with that I decided I would give their online store a bit of a test drive.  It took less than 2min to setup my account and a few simple clicks later my order was done.  I only got one item and which was around R175, so I had to pay a R50 delivery fee.  But delivery is free if your order is R300 or more.  PLUS with every purchase you earn what they call Ruby Rands or Ruby points.  1 Ruby Rand = 1 ZAR.  You can also earn points by doing stuff like referring friends & completing surveys.  So then you rack up those points and pretty soon you can redeem them against something really awesome.

Anyways, back to my order.  It arrived only 2 days later…

Ta da! Love the packaging.

And I’m happy to report that I also really dig the product I purchased.  Have been using it religiously to add some colour to my lily-white legs:

Model Co – One night tan. It’s an easy mousse you smooth on to give you some instant colour. And there’s none of that OMG is it going to streak or go orange stress, cause you simply just wash it off again. Pure awesome.

So next time you’re dreading heading to the shops to refill your beauty supplies, why not check Rubybox out instead.  They also have a few nice gifting things for guys.  Do check out their Valentine’s day Man Box for only R149 (value of the contents adds up to R350):

All4women’s WindowShopper will save you hours in the malls which leaves more time for cocktails

The boyfriend got me this card for my bday last month:

DSC03470

Too cute hey…  He said when he saw it, it immediately reminded him of me.

And he’s absolutely right.  That little kid is so me.  I’m OBSESSED with online shopping and I get that exact same entranced look… mouth hanging slightly open, a little bit of drool visible.. a bomb could go off right next to me and I wouldn’t even flinch. ;)

The thing I like about it most is the total convenience factor.  I like, I click, I get.  It’s awesome.  The only downside is that not all the SA shops I love have online stores and if they do, delivery could take a while when in some cases I want more of an instant gratification thing or I might need a certain something ASAP.  I also know a lot of people are still very nervous about online shopping, especially when it comes to clothing.  A lot of ladies want to be able to try something on before committing, and I get that.

Luckily the team at All4women.co.za have come to the rescue with their new WindhowShopper feature.  It’s not an online store in that you can secure a purchase online, BUT it collates all the latest items from most of the major stores in SA in one convenient location.  Loads of new items are added daily which means that you can get it while its hot and it’s kinda like watching the store folk packing out their new stock onto the shelves and as soon as you see something you like, you know exactly where to go to snatch it up before anybody else can.

Screen Shot1

You can either do a general browse (which will show all latest items first), or you can search by type of clothing & store:

Screen Shot2

And that list of stores is pretty impressive…

I spent a few hours minutes (after hours of course boss) on it the other day and these gorgeous babies have already caught my eye:

Woolworths – R375

What I also love is that you can change up your view to show you up to 90 items per page, which means if you’re a pro shopper like myself, you can do a speed scan and move through hundreds and hundreds of items in just minutes.  How’s that for taking shopping to the next level!

If you like the sound of saving hours & hours of Canal Walk shopping time.  Hop on over there and have a look for yourself.  Just be warned – WindowShopper is very addictive and your general productivity might be at risk. :)

Merry Xmas with Indiemode (and a chance to win)

Yup, it’s that time of year again folks… shopping centres become flooded with slow moving people, you drive around for hours trying to find parking & you’re forced to listen to Boney M on endless loop.  Nooooooooooooo!!! ;)

Well this year, why not avoid all that by doing your xmas shopping online?  This is my plan for survival for sure.  To kick things off, the lovely folks at online ladies fashion store Indiemode have put together a list of great gifting ideas starting from as little as R80.

And with a free delivery option to all SA post offices (or R80 if you prefer a door-to-door courier delivery), it’s super easy.  Plus they’ll even wrap the prezzie for you.  Love the convenience factor…

And get this, one lucky reader will win a R250 voucher to spend as he/she pleases on the Indiemode website.  Yup, that’s right, none of that “oh you have to spend R350 before you can use your voucher” stuff, just spend R250 and score 100%, or spend more and get R250 off.

All you have to do is send a tweet including @CTmylove and @IndiemodeZA and just tell us who your favourite designer on the Indiemode website is.  Also use the following hashtag: #LoveIndiemodeWin

Terms & conditions:

So good luck guys & happing xmas shopping to all.

Indiemode is live & ready for you to shop away

A while back I told you about a new Cape Town based, proudly South African online fashion store called Indiemode which was scheduled to launch at the end of Aug (you can check out my original post over here).  I played model for them and got a bit of an inside scoop into the awesome things they would be featuring and I’ve been dying to tell you a little more…

So Indiemode is now live and I’m already working on my wish list. :)   First up, here’s a little summary of the jewellery & accessories I’m currently lusting after:

From top, left to right:
  • Chevron Geometric Cut-Out Necklace by Genevieve Motley (R188);
  • Engraved Vintage Camera Cut-Out Heart Brooch by Genevieve Motley (R138);
  • Chandelier Earrings in Gold by White Rabbit Days (R108);
  • Sam Clutch in Ivory Snake Print by Mula Designs (R999);
  • Black Onyx Stones on Tan Leather Necklace by Joy Jewellery (R508);
  • Crossbody Handbag in Pista Gobi by Mula Designs (R1423);
  • Indhi Tan Leather Belt by Indhi Design Studio (R532);
  • Bird Brooch by A Bird Named Frank (R170);
  • Dagger Earrings in Silver by Famke Jewellery Design (R578)
And how good is the pricing?  I mean there really is something there for every budget and I’m certainly a girl who really loves a good deal.  On the clothing front, my wardrobe definitely needs these pieces:
From left to right:
  • Boobtube Maxi Dress by Indhi Design Studio (R583);
  • Floral & Leopard Print Tulip Skirt by Janie B Clothing (R280);
  • Twist Dress by Tarien Malherbe “non-european™” (R673)
And these:
From left to right:
  • Day Dress by Tarien Malherbe “non-european™” (R633);
  • Floral Print Smocked Pants by Janie B Clothing (R360);
  • Ponte Shift Dress with Belt by Mishah Designs (R540)
Oh and there’s also a few things on sale already which means you can get this really cute boho tank for example for only R200:
Indiemode offers you two easy and safe ways to pay, via EFT or Credit card and their standard delivery option to your nearest post office is FREE.  For R80 however you can get your order delivered to your door and if you’re not happy with anything you’ve purchased, you have 14 days to return it.

I’m loving how online shopping is now really starting to take off in SA.  Not only does it open you up to creative labels which you probably would never have come across otherwise, but buying online also means less time spent in queues and helping me save on queueing time is pretty damn cool in my book. AND to the guys: it now makes it easier to spoil that special lady in your life or get out of the dog box if you happened to do something stupid… like… coming home with a “tramp stamp” tattoo thanks to a drunken dare (I actually recently heard a story like this. Haha). Jewellery and clothes beat flowers in situations like those every single time. Just sayin’. ;)

Happy shopping!

I gave the new Mr Price Online store a bit of a test drive

So after my traumatising Forever21 experience which I told you guys about yesterday… I needed something to fill that gaping hole in my heart. ;)   Luckily for me, the people at Mr P launched a rocking new Mr Price online store!

I was immediately impressed with the site look, feel, layout & navigation.  You can see these folks did their homework pretty damn well.  The site is easy to use, everything is organised really well and in my opinion it’s pretty much the SA equivalent of the Forever21 site.  Thus I automatically loved it…

Now I’ve had very hit or miss moments with Mr P in the past.  They have some really cute shoes and undies at times, but I haven’t been too lucky with their clothing.  BUT, I’m forever running into people at parties and such wearing something amazing and then when I ask where they got it they’d say (to my surprise and annoyance) – Mr Price!  I just thought “aaarrgggh, why can’t I ever find these gems???”  I guess it just boils down to the fact that I’m not a very patient shopper.  I hate having to work my way through rails and rails of things until I find that one item I love… I want to go in, make the kill and move on to the next store.  :)   Oh and then I also hate rediculously long queues, something you unfortunately get at Mr P stores all the time.

This new online store opened up a whole new Mr P world to me.  I can now browse things from my comfy couch and quickly elimitate things I don’t like.  Also delivery to your doorstep only costs you R35 and if you’re not happy with anything you can just take it back to your nearest store or pop it back in the post (however then you have to pay the cost of postage).

For my first order, I will admit, I went a bit outside of my comfort zone fashion wise.  I wanted to try a few different things, take some risks, etc.  This is what I got:

My package arrived only 2 days later (very impressive – they say it normally takes 1 – 3 working days):

Ta da! Love it… just like Xmas morning…

Cut & sizing wise, the blazer, pants & shoes didn’t quite work.  But I did love the cute leopard undies & chunky statement necklace.  So ja, not a great hit rate on my first order.  But I wasn’t too fussed.  This was still a nice trial run and I can only improve from here, right?

I popped into a Mr P store that weekend to return the items I didn’t love and it was easy peasy, no questions asked.  I will be giving the online store another bash for sure.  I’m determined to become on of those people who in response to a compliment can say “I know right.  I got it from Mr P and it cost me practically nothing!” :)

Our Forever21 customs nightmare

Since January this year, my friend Leigh and I have been totally obsessed with buying from US based fashion store Forever21.  I told you guys about my first purchase back on 20 Jan over here and then did another follow up post after our first order arrived over here.  We were so thrilled with the fact that we were getting on-trend items at crazy good prices and without having to sacrifice too much on quality…  this was just too good for words…

Since then we’ve had a string of successful purchases and every time we were lucky enough that it just arrived, about a week later, to our doorsteps, without any questions asked.  There was once we had to pay a very small customs charge, but it was still super cheap.  We thought we had struck gold and that we would never have to set foot in an actual store again! (OK, that’s a total lie – shopaholics need regular fixes, but at least we’d need to shop in-store a little less)

But our most recent order sadly crushed all that happiness, kinda like that moment when your triple scoop ice cream topples over and falls to the ground. :(

I first picked up that something was different when I got an email from courier company Globeflight informing me that our parcel should be arriving soon.  Firstly we had already been waiting much longer than usual and then all our other orders had been coming through via DHL, so I wasn’t sure how Globeflight had now gotten involved with this specific shipment.

A week later they emailed me again, informing me that our parcel needed to go through customs clearance.  I figured, oh well, we always mentally prepared ourselves that this was a risk associated to buying from overseas sites, so this was a bummer, but just one of those things really.  I just wanted to pay it and get it over and done with.  BUT unfortunately it wasn’t going to be that simple.  First Globeflight said that the invoice Forever21 attached to the shipment was incorrect.  I sent them my invoice infomation along with our PayPal payment confirmation, but they said that this wasn’t good enough.  They needed to source it from Forever21 directly, an excercise which ended up taking quite some time.  Then they said that customs now wanted to check our stuff to make sure it’s not counterfeit goods.  Why would it be counterfeit all of a sudden?  It’s from a reputable store and you’ve been able to source the correct invoice info & proof of payment?  Anyways, I just had to go with the flow it seemed.  Yet more time passed…

Eventually after weeks of waiting and following up daily (otherwise I wouldn’t hear anything), Globeflight said they could send me the invoice of what we needed to pay for the customs and then as soon as they’d received confirmation of payment, we could get our stuff.  Yay finally! (or so I thought)

Now before I show you the invoice – I want to note a few things:

  • The rand value of the clothing was about R2280.
  • We had also already paid $78 on Forever21 for international priority shipping
  • Customs on clothing & accessories is supposed to range from 30 – 45%, then they also charge you another 10% as an import fee + VAT.  This is the part I was expecting…

This is what I received:

The R1390.96 amount I was OK with.  One thing to note though is that they take the value of the item, then add the 30 – 45% plus the 10% and then they charge VAT on that new total amt (not on the original amt).  So it works out a little more than you expect.

BUT – it was the other charges adding up to R1372.06 (incl VAT) that had me totally confused.  I mean, what the hell was all that about!?!  R450 for as a documentation fee!?!  The worst part was when I queried it I was told that if I didn’t pay asap, they would start charging me for storage.  So wait, it took you over 3 weeks to get to this point and now you also want to start charging me for storage!?!  Aaarrgggghhh.  Our stuff was being held hostage.

We considered telling them to destroy the clothes, we didn’t know whether we actually even wanted it anymore… but in the end we decided to just pay up to finally bring an end this horrible experience.

I now feel like even though I thought I had wrapped my head around the whole customs thing and I was well prepared, I still got totally blindsided with regards to all the other stuff.  For me personally, I don’t think I’ll be buying abroad again anytime soon.  But hey, we had a good run at least.

I wanted to share this with you guys just as something to keep in mind if you’re currently considering making any purchases yourselves.  You might get lucky like we did at first, but then again you might also hit this level of poo which will leave you hating your purchase forever and ever. ;)   So just be mindful really.  Prepare yourselves for the worst, and then some more… and maybe a little bit more than that… then I think you’ll be OK.

Indiemode online fashion store teaser

There’s a new online fashion player on the horizon.  It’s called Indiemode, their home base is here in Cape Town, and they’re due to launch on 31 Aug.  My retail therapy addicted soul is smiling big time. :)

It’s going to be focused on the ladies (sorry boys!), but hey, who knows what the future brings…  They will also be focusing on proudly South African designers only, so think all things with that unique SA flair, locally produced and original.  In this way, Indiemode will be providing a platform for our local brands & designers to get some much needed exposure.

If you are a local designer who wishes to showcase your things on Indiemode, you can contact their project manager, Dani Jibrail at dani@indiemode.co.za

They already have a whole host of local talent who will be featured with their launch.  They include:

Oh and looky looky, you’ll even be seeing me striking a pose or two. ;)

Duck Egg – not just something you can eat, also a colour you’ll be wearing this summer…

Check out their Facebook page or follow them on Twitter for more info.  Or pop on over to their website and subscribe so long, that way you’ll know immediately when the site is up.

Front row @ the Shop the Runway launch

Last Fri eve my friend Clouds and I attended the launch fashion show of new online shopping destination, Shop The Runway.

Shop the Runway is a Cape Town based company which aims to bring exclusive designer brands to SA shoppers at affordable prices.  Love the sound of that.  And… as I’m Cape Town’s nr 1 shopping queen, of course it made sense to have me at the event. ;)

The launch took place at the beautiful Bay Hotel in Camps Bay – a favourite of mine during summer for some cocktails and pool time.  Especially before heading over to Caprice for a bit a “see & be seen” session.  Aaaah… summer… seems soooo far away at the moment…

Anyhoo, upon arrival we were handed some tasty SKYY vodka cocktails and then we took our seats, front row nogal, very excited to get a look at big labels such as Marc by Marc Jacobs, Rachel Roy, BCBG Max Azria, Cole Haan, Elizabeth & James and Jessica Simpson shoes.  Oh hold me back now!

Check out those massive grins…

The show featured ready-to-wear garmets, with lots of pieces which would be perfect for day to day and then some sexy dresses for those nights out on the town:

Liked all the pops of colour…

After the show we did a quick catch up with Shop the Runway owner, Janine Bailey.  She told us that the site will be run as a bit of a pilot at first with only a few niche items available for purchase.  She wants to get a feel for what does well and what doesn’t, that way she can adjust her stock purchases to be more in line with what us SA ladies want.

They will be getting new stock within the next month and thereafter new items will be added on a regular basis.  A good tip if you want to stay in the loop is to register on the site.  This way you’ll get an instant email notification when new goods have arrived.

Me with Janine

The site actually only went live this past Mon, and I decided to go do a bit of browsing to check it out for myself.  The options are quite limited at the moment, same with sizing.  But as I noted above, this is just a pilot.  I did however fall madly in love with these bright beauties by Jessica Simpson, all going for R850:

Now which one of you will be coming home with me? Hmmmm…

I took the middle shoe above (which is called the Evangela btw) and did a bit of research online to see what I could find in regard to pricing:

  • This shoe is currently on sale on the Jessica Simpson website, was $98, now $69.99 – at the current exchange rate of around 8.2, that would be R573.91.  But they don’t ship to SA.  So you’re kinda stuck there.
  • Then I found them on Shoes.com – there they are R872.40 and that’s before any shipping costs.  So a bity pricey.
  • Also checked Yahoo Shopping and on there the price range was $81.14 – $82.99 (R665 – R680), but again that’s without shipping costs.  Plus you have to factor in customs duties.  Which for shoes & clothing sits at 45% of the value of the item.  Ouch.  With that in mind, even the sale price on the Jessica Simpson site doesn’t match up to the price you’re paying here.

So seems to me you’re getting a pretty good deal, especially when you factor in that delivery is free if you buy for over R500.  Plus another benefit is that you don’t have to wait weeks for your delivery (which is usually the case with international deliveries) as your items will reach you within 5 working days.

They do not have a credit card payment facility yet – but you can pay via EFT.  Either a direct EFT payment from your side or through a facility called Payfast which processes EFT payments in a fast & secure way.  Sounds simple enough.

So it looks like this is one to watch.  I’m very interested to see how their offering will grow.  Janine also mentioned that they have started planning for their summer range, so will be keeping an eye for that for sure.

Zando launch @ Orphanage

On Tue eve I was lucky enough to attend the official media launch for new SA online store, Zando.

Now some of you might remember my post just over a month back about my first Zando shopping experience… (if you missed it, you can check it out here).  In that post I noted all the cool site features that I really loved, but I also noted some things that weren’t so cool.

Something I really appreciated was the fact that they actually took the time to read my post and then gave me the following feedback:

Hi Karisa,

I am the Customer Service Manager at Zando. I really appreciate your feedback, we are going to use it to improve and make our customer experience super amazing.

All departments have seen your post and are working at warp speed to make sure this does not happen again.

I hope that we do see you again, we value every customer:-)

Love and Happiness,

Liz.

How great is that?  From my experience there are very few companies that would respond this well to a bit of criticism and then even turn it into a massive positive thing.  Love it.

The chic venue for the big event was new Cape Town hot spot, Orphanage which is situated on the corner of Bree & Orphan st.  I’ve actually been dying to check this spot out because everyone’s been raving about the insane cocktails.  So that sweetened the deal even more.

First I just have to blab a bit about the venue & the drinks, then we’ll get back to what’s been cooking at Zando. :)

Orphanage has the most amazing chandelier feature that stretches the entire length of the ceiling:

I was thinking… Now how would I fit something like that into my apartment? Hmmmm…

And the bar is an elegant dark wood beauty with a lot of swagger…

As for these killer cocktails people have been raving about, I must say their menu is no run of the mill “so boring I want to stick a fork in my eye” type of menu.  It has been carefully planned out by professional mixologists to take your taste buds on a journey they’ll never forget.

The first one I tried was the “More tea, vicar?” which contains vanilla vodka, rooibos, cranberry & lemon and it served in a regte egte tea cup and saucer:

It was seriously good. And the best part is that R15 from each of these babies is donated to a Cape Town children’s home. How cool is that?

The next cocktail which tempted me with promises of cucumber sandwiches on the side was the Orphanage Martini with gin, cucumber, elderflower & mint:

Yes… you’re not seeing things… that’s real cucumber sandwiches on the side!

OK OK, enough gushing about how awesome this venue is.  You guys will just have to go check it out for yourselves and then let me know which cocktail’s your favourite.  Just two last tips: I hear the Brimstone & Fire is another “hot” little number and I also really loved their truffle fries with wasabi aioli which is from their “sharing food” (as they call it) menu.

Right, back to Zando.  Now only 3 months old, they’ve grown from offering just a handful of brands to about 200 at present!  AND they still have plans for more to come and also for them to expand their offerings from the current shoes, clothing & accessories categories to anything lifestyle related, like homeware products for example.

MD and co-founder, Eugen Petersen, was there to talk to us about the Zando brand, their commitment to kick ass service and how they want to change the way South African’s shop by taking online shopping “to the next level”.

After the formalities were done, I got to chat to their fashion editor, Megan Pascall, who turns out is a Love Affair with Cape Town reader (yay!).  Being a fashion editor naturally Megan was oozing style and I wondered immediately what beautiful things she might have hiding away in her wardrobe.

We seemed to have been psychically connected when selecting our looks for the evening… both donning a monochrome look with a sheer white blouse…

Other fabulous people on the scene were Elrico Bellingan from Luxo blog and his always fabulous from head to toe girlfriend, Ritza:
And one of my Gansbaai adventure weekend buddies, eNews reporter Tanya Nefdt:

How stunning is this lady?

Other SA celebs in attendance included Top Billing’s Jo-Anne Strauss, soccer hottie Ryan Botha, Goldfish’s Dom Peters, model Lisa Cowley, TV personality Liezel van der Westhuizen, and Dirty Skirts front man Jeremy de Tolly.

From left to right: Megan Pascall (Zando), Eugen Petersen (Zando), Liza Cowley & Jeremy de Tolly.  ** Photo by the talented Denzil Jacobs – be sure to check out his blog:  http://justforthenostalgia.wordpress.com

On our way out we were totally spoilt with goodie bags filled with treats to keep you warm during winter (mostly thanks to the extra layer of fat you’ll be sporting. hehe).

Thanks to Elrico for letting me “borrow” this piccie from his stack. xxx

A HUGE thanks to Zando & Red Carpet concepts (the PR agency who put this little shindig together).  It was a really fun evening out and a nice way to ease myself back into Cape Town life after my holiday.

Oh and just in case you were thinking “So what… just because they invited you to a fancy pants party, liquored you up and fed you, you’ve totally forgotten about all the not so cool points you hightlighted in your last post?”   Well no…  I’m not that easy… most of the time. ;)   I did some looking around on their site again and these are my findings:

  • The cart & checkout process now clearly shows your selected size at all times.  No more stress about whether you selected the right thing or not.
  • The clothing selection is way better now, with lots more options and some really nice brands.  Far from the “snooze fest” I called it last time round.

And as for the delivery drama from last time… well in my goodie bag I also got a 25% off voucher, so I’ll be putting them through their paces again soon to confirm that one.  Just have to save up some casheesh and put aside some free time to browse through all their new goodies.
