All the action from the Glamour Stiletto Run (in aid of the WHEAT Trust)

IMG_0082

On Saturday morning… in the rain… a group of very brave women (and even some men) assembled at the Table Bay Hotel in the V&A Waterfront to don their best pair of heels (and by best in this instance I mean: most aerodynamic & built for speed) to take on a 100 meter stretch of treacherous cobblestone…

And why exactly would we do such a crazy thing?  Well there was amazing prizes up for grabs for the fastest stiletto sprinter in the Cape, which yes, helped with some motivation.  But the most important goal was to create awareness & collect funds for an incredible charity based over in Wynberg called WHEAT Trust (Women’s Hope, Education and Training).

WHEAT Trust is a SA Women’s Fund which aims to empowers grassroots women.  They provide grants to small Community Based Organisations (CBOs) and women who cannot get access to formal funding.  Their priority is to grant women access to information and knowledge in order to enhance and nurture their skills, and in this way they are able to support local women’s initiatives and promote a culture of giving.

Run by Glamour SA, this annual event has become quite a popular fun-filled day for which ladies start training months and months in advance to get that competitive edge. ;)  The rules were strict – heels had to be at least 7cm high and a max width of 1.5cm – wedges were most certainly not allowed.

Every contestant walked away with a 6 month Glamour Subscription plus a goodie bag filled with gifts from Revlon and more as well as a charity donation.  And get this, the ultimate winner walked away with a whopping R11000 V&A Waterfront voucher as well as another R4000 voucher from Europa Art shoes.  Yes that’s right, a R15000 shopping spree!  Totally worth risking a broken ankle or two hey…

The hustle & bustle before the races kicked off.

I have to say, signing the indemnity form did make me a little nervous…

DSC06350

For a girl with zero coords, this was certainly a risky endeavour…

But luckily Revlon was there to make everyone feel absolutely amazing with pro-makeup, manis & pedis:

The Mainstay bar was keeping everyone refreshed with their Mainstay boxtails:

Liquid courage for the race…

And we got to get up close & personal with Los Angeles jeans label, Paige.

Known for quality materials & unexpected detailing, this label is known as a world class premium denim brand and A-list celebs just can’t get enough.  People like our very own Charlize, Angelina Jolie, Natalie Portman, Rihanna, Gwen Stefani, Cameron Diaz and many many more have all been seen rocking Paige denims.

I was quite drawn to that striped pair – it’s got an awesome rocker edge to it.

This is what the striped one looks like on:

And making a booking to visit their showroom which is over in Sea Point (29 Wisbeach Road).

Now, let’s take a closer look at some of the contenders & their stilettos of choice.

Fabulous pair, Arthur Malan from GQ Style & and his partner and editor of Eye of Needle, Jason Basson, was there to respresent the GQ magazine team.  They got their shoes at London fashion week daaahlings:

DSC06344

Absolutely love them…

I chose a pair of colour-block Zara heels (which the boyfriend said was way too flimsy, but it worked best with my overall look, so that was that OK).

Left: With bestie Leigh; Top right: other bestie, Clouds, lookin’ hot with the Revlon girls; Bottom right: With journo & awesome guy Clayton Morar (he did not rock any heels tsk tsk) and face of Decleor, Thandie Kupe.

I absolutely loved Thandie’s shoes which she sourced over in the US:

And they were nice & sturdy too. The boyfriend would’ve approved…

Bright colours were also very popular:

Lookin’ good ladies, lookin’ good.

And our lovely MC for the day, Liezel van der Westhuizen, looked amazing in a black & gold pair by Europa Art shoes:

After putting on our “Team Paige” Ts, I realised that Sonia Booth was competing against us in the “celeb” race.  And just like that, my hopes of becoming a stiletto run champion were crushed.  I just knew by looking at this ladies pins, I was totally screwed…

stilettorun4

Top left: With Sonia. Top right: loved how Sonia matched her nail varnish to her sexy sandals. Bottom: with Clouds & Leigh, ready to sprint.

We first got to watch the Glamour reader races which were quite intense.  These ladies showed pure determination & grit.  No risk of injury was going to sway them from their ultimate goal of being the 2013 Cape Town champion.  Wooha!

stilettorun5

Ready… set… and run for your lives ladies…

We also got to watch the GQ team take on the Glamour team where Jason absolutely murdered the competition:

stilettorun6

Just watch that boy go! I was super impressed… I don’t think I’ve ever moved that fast, ever, heels or no heels.

And then it was time… time for the celeb/blogger race which consisted of (from left to right below):  Nicci Saint Bruce from Citykidssting.com & Bitchesmustknow.co.za,  Clouds from AndLollipops.com, me!, Decleor’s Thandie Kupe, Leigh from LipglossIsMyLife.com and Sonia Booth.

stilettorun7

First we sized each other up… then we had to introduce ourselves to the crowd (no pressure)… Thx to Roy Curitz for sending through these pics of us.

Now I don’t have piccies of the actual race & finish line.  If I source some, I will definitely add them in here.  But what I can tell you is that I came 3rd.  3rd from the back that is! Haha.  Top 3 went to: Sonia, followed by Thandie and then in actual 3rd place, Clouds. Congrats ladies!  They each walked away with a beautiful pair of Paige jeans for their efforts.

Because of my totally poor performance this year, I am going to start working on my fitness now already in preparation for the next one.  Next year I will be a lean, mean, stiletto killing machine I tell you. :)

A huge thanks to the guys & girls at Glamour magazine as well as Jill Grogor and the rest of the team at Zebra Square who coordinated the event.  This was an awesome day which did an awesome thing for a very worthy cause.  High 5s all round!

My night at the Oscars (well kinda), thanks to Glamour magazine

DSC04792So this year’s Academy Awards ceremony, better known as the Oscars, was quite exciting hey?

Host & Family Guy creator, Seth MacFarlane, decided to open the show with a song about boobs!? Ja, didn’t quite get that one…  At least Adele’s amazing performance of Skyfall totally overshadowed that moment. ;)

Quvenzhané Wallis made history by becoming the youngest actress ever to be nominated for the Best Actress category at the tender age of 9.  Yes 9!  What were you doing at 9? I spent my days playing with my Malibu Barbie who had to marry one of my damn teddy bears (like sooo embarrassing) cause my mom refused to buy me a Ken doll…  But let’s move along swiftly…  Jennifer Lawrence actually walked away with the prize for her role in Silver Linings Playbook (awesome movie btw) and shame she tripped on the way to accepting her award which really resonated with me cause I’m super clumsy and that kind of stuff happens to me ALL the time.  I would have just done a far less graceful job, that’s for sure…

Other big awards were as follows:

  • Best Actor:  Daniel Day-Lewis for his role as Abraham Lincoln in Lincoln
  • Best Supporting Actor: Christoph Waltz for his role in Django Unchained
  • Best Supporting Actress:  Anne Hathaway for her role in Les Misérables
  • Best Picture:  Argo (another movie I absolutely loved)
  • Best Director: Ang Lee for Life of Pi (probably my favourite movie of 2012)

Ooh and then a big proudly South African moment when Searching for Sugar Man – a documentary about two Cape Town fans who went on a search to find out what actually happened to musician, Rodriguez (the man who became massively popular here in SA during the 70s/80s) – won for Best Documentary Feature.  High 5s all round!

Now I actually got to enjoy all these great Oscars moments with my own little red carpet moment at the Glamour Oscars party which was held at a venue which I think kicks that Dolby Theatre’s butt – our very own, beautiful Table Bay Hotel in the V&A Waterfront.

With co-sponsors like YSL, Cruz Vodka & Ceres also on board, I just knew we were in for quite an evening…

The lovely Liezel van der Westhuizen was doing an awesome job as our version of an E! Red Carpet reporter:

Show that Giuliana how it’s done…

And the fabulous guests in attendance went all out in celebration of this night of glamour, great fashion moments & cinematic excellence…

But how hilarious is this photo of soccer star, Matthew Booth, towering over us.  They could’ve at least done what they do for Tom Cruise and let us stand on a step or something. :)

DSC04838

And I must say, what an absolutely lovely guy. Wow.

After a bit of mingling and cocktails, we settled in at our table with a huge screen behind us, basically giving us front row seats to all the Oscars action.  I was very happy to be seated at the same table as Matthew & his wife, Sonia Booth.  They are just genuinely sooo nice.  And really such a gorgeous couple.  Was lovely to meet you guys!

oscars_table

The awesome table…

While we enjoyed an amazing 3 course dinner, we watched the awards, cheered and laughed together and I thought to myself… this certainly beats last year when I watched it on my couch while eating cereal for dinner (I can’t cook – so don’t judge me too harshly).

oscars_food

For starters we had a Gluwein poached pear & gorgonzola salad, then for mains a basil crusted Scottish salmon and to finish off, a strawberry mirror cake.  Mmmmm.

I have to say a huge thank you to Glamour SA as well as Jill Grogor from Zebra Square (and her team – Odette you rock) for allowing me to be part of this amazing evening.

It has certainly set a new standard for Oscars celebrations in my book.

Just as an extra little titbit… Jill told us about this amazing new club opening in JHB called Kong.  I’ll hopefully be heading up there in at the end of March to check it out.  Obviously only going to give you guys insider intel. ;)

Party like an A-lister at the Glamour Oscars party and stand a chance to also win a R1000 iTunes/iStore voucher

If you’ve always dreamed of walking the red carpet and being part of the Oscars action… get your butt over to the Glamour SA Oscars party on the 25th of Feb dammit! :)

This glamorous annual event sees SA celebs and beautiful people coming together to celebrate the excitement of the Oscars award ceremony while enjoying some amazing food & sexy Cruz Vintage Black cocktails at the beautiful Sun International Table Bay Hotel.

Some piccies from last year's event

Some piccies from last year’s event to tempt you…

Yup, this is your opportunity to knock it out of the park with a killer dress just like these ladies did at last year’s Oscars ceremony:

Lookin’ good ladies, looking’ good… Just don’t take a leaf out of poor Angelina book with that weird leg of hers which even got it’s own parody Twitter account which attracted more than 15,000 followers.
Ja hey… not ideal. ;)
The dress code for this party however has a little twist.  You’ll need to add a touch of purple, inspired by YSL‘s signature colour:
DSC04425

The gorgeous Louise Carver, who is SA’s face of YSL, will also be part of the celeb guest list.  That woman is amazing.  I’m definitely a fan.

Ceres will also be there to introduce their new Apple Sensation fruit juice:
ceres1

And for the guests at the event, they’ll have a chance to win a R1000 iTunes or iStore voucher by simply tweeting a pic of their Ceres juice pack along with a little blurb about it and the following hashtag: #CeresAtGlamourEvent.  The person who gets the most retweets by the end of the event will walk away the wina-wena!  That’s pretty easy…

Then in addition to that (and this one’s for everyone – whether you were at the event or not) you can also stand a chance to win one of 7 Apple iPhones from 1 Mar onwards if you visit www.ceres.co.za.  So don’t forget to keep an eye out for that one too.

Right, so I know what you’re thinking, how do I make sure I’m part of the action?  Here’s all the details you need to know:

  • Where?  Table Bay Hotel in the V&A Waterfront
  • When?  Mon, 25 Feb 2013
  • What time?  7:30pm
  • What must I wear?  Black tie with a touch of purple and gold.
  • How much are we talking?  R450 pp – but that includes a delicious 3 course meal (and trust me, the Table Bay’s food is out of this world), Cruz Vintage black cocktails, a goodie bag (yay!) and a 1 year subscription to Glamour.  AND they’ll be screening all the highlights from the Oscars ceremony right there, so you won’t miss a beat.
  • OMG, sounds amazing, where do I book?  Email admin@zebrasquare.co.za or call them on 011 784 8112.

Hopefully I’ll see you guys there.

High tea at the beautiful Table Bay Hotel

Last Saturday, right in the middle of a mini Cape Storm, Bjorn and I got to enjoy a relaxing & indulgent afternoon of High Tea at the Table Bay Hotel in the V&A Waterfront.

Now this hotel has always been a favourite of mine.  I’ve been there for a few events and have also been to their Camelot Spa for a little treat for myself, but their restaurant & High tea are two things I had not yet had the pleasure of experiencing.

Every time I walk into that reception hall I’m blown away by how beautiful this hotel is.  It’s got that old world charm to it, rich colours, atrium style windows, furniture with a gorgeous antique feel, the kind of space which immediately makes you you think of royalty and how they probably live…

So the challenge for the afternoon:  High Tea consisting of 3 courses, each course carefully paired with fine teas from TWG.  TWG is a Singapore based company (just so you know).  They source the best tea leaves, spices and flavour-packed ingredients from all around the world, making their tea something quite special.  Food wise you’re also in really good hands because the High Tea menu has been specially created by the Table Bay executive chef, Jocelyn Myers.

As we settled into our seats and took in the waterfront views, our waiter came to say hi:

This is Frankie.  He painstakingly brought us our food crumb by crumb… like the little piece he has there next to him…

OK OK, that didn’t actually happen. :)   But that would have been a pretty awesome Disney moment, right?  Our real waiter was Sergio and he was an absolute sweetheart.  He didn’t even blink an eye when I put milk & sugar into one of my teas, which when it comes to top quality tea, that’s like asking for All Gold tomato sauce at a fine dining spot…

For the first course however, I was brave and went for the Royal Darjeeling tea without any milk or sugar.  And I was really surprised.  I didn’t need to add anything because the flavour just popped.  Bjorn had the Lung Ching tea, which is a green tea and according to Sergio his top choice for that particular course.  Now courses one & two are served at your table and then for course three, they let you loose on the cake buffet.

We kicked things of with some fancy finger sandwiches:

Clockwise from left: egg mayo, cucumber & cream cheese, veggie wrap and salmon & cream cheese.

But it doesn’t stop there, they also bring you a selection of mini quiches:

From front to back: mushroom & ham, bacon and salmon.

Normally I don’t really enjoy quiches, especially when they’ve got that soggy eggy texture to them. Blegh.  But these had a nice crispy crust and were totally yum.

Course number 2 is probably one of my favourite things in the world:  scones with fresh cream & preserves.  You just don’t get better than that.

You get a selection of scones: in the front you have a plain one, then in the back there’s a raisin scone and on the right is my favourite out of the bunch, a red pepper scone. This is then paired with a plum preserve, fresh cream, clotted cream & lemon curd.

This was so good, we asked for a 2nd round of scones.  Forgot to mention with course 1, you can even ask for a refill! :)   Paired with our scones we both opted for the French Earl Grey tea.  This is where I crumbled and added the milk & sugar.  Just because I’m used to having my Earl Grey that way.  But I think Bjorn was a bit embarrassed. hehe.

To catch our breath a bit before we tucked into course number 3, Sergio brought us some of the recommended teas for the last course to see & smell:

Beautiful right?  Clockwise from top left: Pink Flamingo green tea, Red Christmas rooibos tea, Bain de Roses black tea (there’s an extra cost for this one though) and the Number 12 black tea (you can see there it has some coffee beans & dried coconut mixed in with the tea leaves)

They all had such an incredible aroma, but I looove pink, so my choice was easy peasy:

The Pink Flamingo! It kinda smelt like Turkish delight, but not quite. I’m still trying to figure out what it reminds me off.

It was at this point Bjorn let me in on his “buffet conspiracy theory”.  He was like: “You see, they fill you up with the sandwiches and scones, delicious as they were, but in the hope that you’ll be too full to overindulge at the cake table.  But they won’t get me.. I’ll show ‘em…”  I had to laugh (a lot).  The look of determination in his eyes was quite impressive.  Obviously some kind of previous buffet trauma was still haunting him. ;)   He was very serious about this, something which was quite evident when you compared our two cake plates.  This was mine:

A good selection I thought…

But this was his:

Right… where to start…

I couldn’t even finish mine, but he worked through his plate like a man on a mission.  I just had to steal this piccie from his Instagram feed to show you:

hehehehehehehe…

Now I was pretty full after this amazing treat.  My stomach had kinda popped out like a little pregnant belly.  But needless to say, a certain someone felt a little more uncomfortable than that… My advice:  Just pace yourself and you’ll be fine.  There’s no need to rush and also no need to panic. ;)

A huge thank you to Sarah Prins, the PR Manager at Sun International for setting this up for us.  This was certainly a very special treat and we loved every single minute of it.

Important things to note:

  • High Tea takes place daily from 14:30 to 17:30
  • The cost is R185 per person
  • Rather be safe than sorry and call ahead to book a table:  021 406 5988

Let them eat cake!

The GQ magazine pool party

On Tue evening Bjorn and I popped in at the GQ Magazine pool party on the uber chic pool deck at the always impressive Table Bay hotel.

Yeah, that’s just how I roll…

The dress code was “white hot” (or something like that) – now usually Capetonians are super lazy when it comes to dress up themes, so we didn’t quite stick to it…  but seems that was a serious FAIL on our parts as everyone decided to play along for once!  Go figure.

Some people were a bit more daring with their outfits than others.  Case in point Mr Speedo over here:

I’m sexy and I know it ;)

It was a bit chilly out, but he was faking it well. I bet you he went home and soaked in a piping hot tub for a few hours to defrost. hehe.

I was starving, so I almost jumped the poor waiter when he walked past with these tasty mini burgers:

Yes, they were a bitch to eat and I ended up with sauce on my face.  But I didn’t care.

Other cool snacks were these little cups of seriously yum chicken stir-fry.  Actually we had to hunt these down.  We kept seeing empty trays move past us and we were feeling some serious FOMO (that’s Fear Of Missing Out for those not in the know).  Eventually we begged one of the waiters to see if there was some left over in the kitchen.  He came back 15min later, stir-fry in hand and our hero for the evening. :)

Love this guy!

We got some complimentary champers to enjoy and listened to the musical stylings of DJ René – that old French dude who happens to love his flowy white 100% cotton wear (so he didn’t really need to make an effort to fit in).  Now I don’t hate this guy, I’m just bored of seeing him absolutely everywhere.  Seems he’s the easy option for any event/party/wedding in town.  It’s like this: “Ooooh, I wonder who’s going to be….” and then “Oh, that guy”. ;)

We couldn’t stay too long as we also had the Cosmo Swimwear show to get to, but on the way out we each got treated to a goodie bag filled with all the things you might need to get you beach ready:

GQ mag, sunnies, travel size Eucerin skin goodies, sunscreen, a Havaianas key ring, Piz Buin peak cap and a Sunglass Hut voucher.

I really do wish we could have stayed a bit longer – we also noticed on the way out that there was a jacuzzi.  Now that could have been awesome…  But hey, it’s only the beginning of the summer party season, hopefully there will still be lots of pool party opportunities to come.

Living it up, celeb style…

On Monday eve my friend Leigh (aka Lipglossgirl) invited me along to this fancy pants dinner event as her “plus one”.   Thanks again biets!  Mwah! ♥♥♥

The event was called “Taste of Spring” and the invite stated the following: “Wanted and Table Bay Hotel will celebrate the creativity and passion of good food and wine at our Gourmet Dinner, Fashion and Wine experience…”  Doesn’t that just sound amazing?

For those of you who do not know who/what Wanted is – it is the newspaper, Business Day’s award winning lifestyle magazine.  The event was coordinated by Jill Groger from Zebra Square, who I thought did an absolutely brilliant job of ensuring we all had a memorable evening.

We first met up at the uber trendy & glam men’s fashion store, Fabiani (upper level, V&A Waterfront), for pre-dinner drinks:

Faaaabulous dahling...

There they had this lovely Chivas Regal gentleman serving up some classic Scottish charm… on the rocks of course… ;)

Keeping the crowd happy

Now I’m going to be honest, I’m not really a whiskey drinker.  Maybe one day when I’m a “big girl” I’ll have the palate for it.  But for now, the only way I manage to consume this golden liquid is in shot form.  Yes, I realise that’s a horrible horrible sin.  But that’s just the way I roll…  I do at least look really good just holding it:

Practicing my Chivas grin...

Fabiani stocks some great men’s fashion, but I was especially delighted to stumble upon “Happy Socks”:

The happiest socks I have ever seen!

I loooove them!  I think most men are way too boring when it comes to fashion.  Live a little, have some fun with it, dare to be different!!!  And what easier way to slowly get you into it than with socks…  Easy peasy right?  Another great way for a guy to show a bit of his daring side is with a great tie, and Fabiani can totally hook you up.

Anybody wanna buy a tie? ;)

We soon realised that Leigh and myself would make the ultimate “double trouble” sales team:

Tie me up baby!

Something we should consider, hmmmm… could be raking in some nice commission. :)   While chatting to Fabiani owner, Arie Fabian, I looked down and realised that he was rocking a pair of his very own “Happy Socks” – yeah baby!

Only a real man can pull off socks like these!

Soon it was time to head over to the breathtaking Table Bay Hotel.  Just look how gorgeous that place is:

Ta da!

And just check out this beautiful atrium style lounge area:

Even more ta da!

As we were seated we realised that we were in for an extra little treat – free Gucci fragrances & Southern Right honey for all the guests!  Yay!

Pretty damn sweet... excuse the pun. haha

We then got to mingle with the oh-so-charming Anthony Hamilton Russell, owner of Hamilton Russel Vineyards (located in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley in Hermanus).  The winery produces wine under 3 different labels:  Hamilton Russel Vineyards, Ashbourne & Southern Right.  We were lucky enough to sample two of the wines from the Southern Right label:  The 2011 Sauvignon Blanc and the 2009 Pinotage.  Anthony describes the Sauvignon Blanc (which retails at about R85 per bottle) as “Hermanus’ wine”. I must say I really enjoyed it and it’s got quite an impressive “brag sheet”:  Rated best South African Sauvignon Blanc in the Wall Street Journal (April 2008), voted as one of the 12 best value wines in South Africa by the Wine Spectator in the US, only Sauvignon Blanc to win a gold medal at the 2009 Classic Wine Trophy Awards and the lists goes on and on.  The pinotage was lovely as well and is also backed up by a long list of accolades, but I must admit I found myself enjoying that Sauvignon far too much… if you know what I mean… ;)

The brunette, the blond & the wine maker. That could be a brilliant title for a movie!

Before we settled down for our gourmet 3 course dinner, there was an announcement – a surprise dinner guest was joining us… We were all speculating at who it could be… And then in walked gorgeous actor, Blair Underwood!  You’ll know him from the hit TV series, L.A. Law and movies such as Gattaca & Deep Impact.

Here's me totally starstruck...

He was absolutely lovely and didn’t look a day over 35! (He is in fact 47 years old)  Really good genes I guess.  After all that excitement, we moved onto the food…  The Table Bay Hotel executive chef, Jocelyn Myers, was looking after us for the evening, and boy did she do one hell of a job!

For starters we had Springbok & beetroot carpaccio – with pickled shemiji, parsley/radish salsa, balsamic pearls and roasted garlic melba.  That’s a mouth full!

Just bring me meat! (The Afrikaans "meisie" in me just loved this one)

Then for mains we had seared peppered Sword fish – with confit tomato, apple and fennel, chervil beurre blanc:

That sauce and those juicy little tomatoes on the top were the deal clinchers for me.

During our break before dessert, we got to get up close and personal with some local celebs.  Blonde bombshell, Lieschen Botes, was there.  You might remember her best as the Wonderbra girl a few years back.  Anyhoo, she’s absolutely gorgeous, totally down to earth and very easy to talk to.  A total sweetheart!  Then I got totally overwhelmed when I spotted Top Billing hottie, Aidan Bennetts:

OK, this is a HORRIBLE picture of me, but this boy is soooo cute, had to post the picture regardless. ;)

Aidan also owns his own interior design company – Aidan Bennetts Design -  and makes beautiful furniture pieces.  Actually, I’ve been wanting him to make some furniture for me, preferably wearing minimal clothing… OK OK, I actually meant to say in the nude! haha.

After all that hotness, it was time for dessert.  We had chevin & pear pannacotta with a wild cherry compote:

Even though there was no chocolate in sight, I still really loved this.

Sjoe, at that point I was totally stuffed and slightly tipsy.   Two signs of a great evening for sure. ;)   I had such a fantastic time… What a way to kick start your week!  I could totally get used to this “good life” thing…

Chat soon. xxx
